Fat/protein lumps

Can anyone tell me what protein lumps actually are/how they come about? My boy has had them since I got him and the vets said they won't cause him any harm and they don't. I'm just curious as to what causes them. This year he has developed more and they have gotten bigger. Someone told me it's an allergic reaction to protein but some research has told me this isn't true.

Maybe consider going back to basics with the diet (decent hay, grass that isn't lush and no added extras) if that wouldn't be harmful to him (your vet could advise) and see if the lumps get better? Sometimes there is no "do xyz and the problem will be fixed", sometimes we just have to do our own research and go with our best guess.
