Hi Guys,

Can anyone one recommend a few bits I could try for my welsh D who has a big fat tongue and a low palate.

He seems to be happier in a straight bar but im not sure if thats just because haven't found a jointed one that suits his mouth.

Going to order a few for trial so some suggestions as to what ones to try would really be appreciated.

Thanks :)

I think if he seems happy in the straight bar, perhaps just leaving him in it would be fine. A french link would probably be better than single jointed snaffle, but even with the french link, the link can sometimes reach the roof of the mouth on a horse like yours. So it really is just about finding what hes more comfy in. What are you going to be doing with him? I would always recommend the bitless option, but if your looking to do dressage or showing, its not possible.
Best of luck with finding a suitable bit.

I use a Neue Schule tranz lozenge loose ring on my chap with a great fleshy mouth. He goes very well in in. I found they came up a bit small though so if you go down that route and your horse is in between sizes go for the larger.

It took me 2 years to find a suitable bit for my fat tongued, low palate mare and the one which suited her was this one http://www.tds-saddlers.com/ProductDetails.asp?PCLinkID=1902 Expensive but solved all her problems. You can get a slightly cheaper version made by Nuelle. They are brilliant bits and I have not found a horse yet that does not go well in this bit. It is angled so that it lays flat over the tongue and doesn't interfere with the horse's palate.

I have just changed to a Rockin S Raised Snaffle. Like night and day for my boy. I had him in a Myler comfort snaffle and he rooted, resisted and was difficult to bridle. Happy with his new bit and really responsive.

I'm another who likes PeeWee bits for a thick tongued, fleshy mouthed horse. It has a thin mullen mouth but unfortunately isn't dressage legal. If your horse is happy in a straight bar, I should stick to that. Many horses are uncomfortable in jointed bits.

Another vote for Myler mullen mouth. I had a draught x connie with similar mouth configuration, it took me about 5 years to find the right dressage legal bit and she loved this one.

Thanks everyone!
Lots of ideas there, I have tried a french link eggbutt and hanging cheek, revolver, happy mouth with peanut but he chomps a lot on these. I have also tried the Mullen Barrel Baucher Bit from cotswold sport ( thought this would be simular to myler) but he leaned on this really bad!
I currently have him in a straight bar with a port eggbutt which I found on ebay, it seems to be the best so far but its really big and bulky!
