i was wondering if anyone has any experience in trying to gain weight on their horse, i've had him for 3 years and hes never looked well, he isn't a big eater of forage (tried hay, haylage and grass) nothing seems to get the weight on him he's been on various feeds all to no effect, just a long shot but if anyone has any ideas i thank them greatly!

Coolstance copra has worked a treat for mine.

My mare was looking a little too lean despite spring grass and ad lib decent quality hay.

A small amount (and I'm talking half what the bag recommends for a horse in light work) has made a noticeable difference within a short space of time.

It's high digestible energy (higher than Alfa A Oil or Speedibeet) but low non-structural carbs, so shouldn't make them loopy (though I know some people on here have found it had a loopy effect) It's given her a tad more oomph in a good way and she looks better bodily too.

Has yours had all the usual vet checks to make sure there's no underlying reason for the poor condition?

Cooked linseed, AlphaA Oil and some sugar beet put the weight on my warm blood when he dropped quite a bit after a tooth extraction.

Have you had his teeth done regularly, I would try micronised linseed which is good for all sorts, weight gain, skin health and slow release energy. Could be worth asking for a blood test, three years is a long time.

Mine is a real poor doer and what works is absolutely shed loads of hay, micronised linseed, coolstance copra and Alfa A molasses free plus a good vitamin and mineral supplement and an ulcer supplement. She never stands without food and gets three feeds a day in winter.

He's on winergy condition, spillers condition cubes and linseed. We have tried every feed going from barley to oats to condition cubes, mix, mashes and all the supplements for muscle gain/weight gain. Mine wont eat much hay or haylage but always has access to it. Also, he is living out on good grass too Hes had all the test and had a blood test last month which nothing showed up out of the ordinary, and is currently on B-12 injections in the hope to ''cheer'' him up and increase his appetite! Also had a full MOT teeth, physio, farrier. It is just so frustrating not getting the weight on him

I couldn't get weight on my last horse for love nor money for the first few months I had him. When we moved yards, things changed very quickly and I think he was just stressed because the environment at the old yard didn't suit him. Not saying that's the case with your horse - you've had him for a while and must know him well, just sharing my experience.

The other thing I found was that the same amount of feed but split into more meals works better than fewer, larger meals.

In terms of what to feed, nothing to add to others' suggestions I'm afraid.

I've become a recent convert to Cushcare Condition (D&H). Discovered it during the quest to find a suitable feed for our resident laminitic-it wasn't suitable for her as she's overweight, but I'm currently using it for another horse who needs condition on, and he has packed on the pounds. It's low sugar and low starch, and high in oil and fibre, so I feel comfortable feeding it to anything - and its very palatable. I feed it damp, but it can also be fed as a mash.
