I loved the Jinny & Shantih books, but by about book 7 they were getting a bit mystical for me. I also read the Silver Brumby books and loved the PT books, especially the Pony Club ones mentioned above.

Read the first few of the Jilly Coopers and I'm intrigued now - who dies in Jump? I gotta know!

Did anyone else read a series of books set in America about a girl called Linda Craig and her palomino horse, Chica D'Oro?

Speaking of ones which you liked as a kid, but looking back they were absurd / kid needed a kick up the backside (like Jinny, which I liked, mostly 'cos of the highland references!) - did anyone read the Samantha Alexander "Riders" series - 14 ish y/old going out with a 19 y/old

I also liked Showjumping Secret about a boy partially paralysed by polio learning to jump and competing. And Coco the gift horse :D

Silver Brumby series were my favourites. I re-read them all this summer (i'm 30 lol) and I still get disappointed that in Son of The Whirlwind the horses go south but never find Thowra :(

Also loved most of the others that have been mentioned.

Ooh I had forgotten Fly By Night until someone said it. I seem to remember loving it, must try to track a copy down. I still own my silver brumby books tho, off to hunt them out!

Ooh yes I liked fly by night too!

And no one has mentioned Misty of Chincoteague, and Stormy Misty's Goal yet. They were in our primary school library and they were really nicely illustrated too.

I loved the Ruby Ferguson ones, and Tamzin and Rissa on Romney March and at Punchbowl Farm - I think Black Hunting Whip was one of my all time favourites.

We Hunted Hounds, three books in that series. Three Ponies and Shannon.

And the ones I wept tears over - Black Beauty of course, Smokey, set in the USA and a book I don't know the author called Lucy Purchase. My parents came home after a night out to find me crying and crying over that one.

The Maltese Cat, yes and Kibiri, a Pony on the Indian Frontier. This was a childhood favourite, although it belonged to my friend and it must have been thrown out when her parents moved. I saw a copy at an antique stall a few years ago, but simply didn't have the £10.00 to buy it.

I also absolutely adored the Jinny and Shantih books, as well as Flambards (although all that marrying cousins was a little outdated for me). In adult life I am a massive Jilly Cooper fan but am always disappointed when RCB and Taggie or even Tabitha are not featured highly enough - one of my favorites was Rivals (not the horsiest though).

Another childhood favorite was My Friend Flicka and the Thunderhead stories. Always wanted the rugged Montana rancher as my husband but cant remember the boys name! :D

Kirstyl - the Jilly Cooper set in the school was Wicked I think although as a secondary school teacher was a little far fetched for me!

I was just going to do that.:)

I have just bought a M of C book for a friends daughter, hadn't thought of them for years until I saw it on Amazon yesterday.

Pebblemania - Ken, I believe.

I actually have a horse here called Thunderhead because of the book, commonly known as Dunderhead though.

My Friend Flicka was my absolute favourite.

Another was a book called Rosina Copper, which drove me mad because I had a second hand copy and the last three pages were missing!! Never did find out what happened in the end.

Jill books, loved Rapide, Jinny and Shanith, Black Stallion, Silver Brumby, Black Beauty, Fly-by-Night (what was the sequel to that called)? And I vaguely remember the Jackie books, she had a pony called Misty? And another book where the pony was called Quest!

Recent years Jilly Cooper, Billy Lloyd Fox and Angel :) just finished reading Fiona Walker's Kiss and Tell bit cheesy at the end, a bit happily after after for me and just reading Jump so please don't say who died!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone remember a book called the horse
Masters? It was about a school where you boarded and basically rode and did horse stuff all day. I loved it!

When I've got time, I'll scan them in for you! Nothing worse than not knowing the ending. Agree, it's a great book.

Don't think I read the Ginny books but yes to most of the others! KM Peyton, the P-T sisters, Ruby Ferguson, Monica Dickens etc. And what about Pat Smythe's Three Jays series? I remember loving Three Jays Over the Border which was something to do with stealing a point-to-pointer in Ireland from (unreliable) memory.

Last year a friend and I went to the SWHP open day, and they had a book stall with probably every single book that has been mentioned on this thread so far - we got thoroughly over excited, couldn't decide which ones to buy, and so bought the whole lot!!

So if anyone's after anything in particular, let me know and I'll have a look to see if I've got it.

My personal favourite is the Radney Riding Club (Josephine P-T) although also love Tan and Tarmac by Gillian Baxter

Ooo - Tan and Tarmac! Had that and loved it, although can't remember the details much but seem to think it was about a riding school in a mews in central London?

Yeah that's right, and a western show came to London and kept the star horses with them, and they helped out at the performances - love it!

It was - I remember that one particularly clearly, because the Three Jays had been asked to help another child called Penny (who ended up riding said point-to-pointer) who'd become 'very fat'. The illustration in the book showed a girl who would maybe be a size 10 in current dress sizes... As a 14-y-o wearing an adult size 14 at the time, that depressed me!

I thought nobody was going to mention Snow Cloud Stallion, or Rosina Copper but we got there eventually. How about The Golden Horse with the Silver Tail by Ursula Moray Williams? Just Googled it to check I had the right title and there's one identical to my copy for sale for £149.99!!!! Not that I'd ever sell of course.

Oh, and A Pony for Jean - I have a very old copy which was illustrated by Anne Bullen. Lovely.
