I still have and occasionally re read my Pullein-Thompsons, Silver Brumby and Patricia Leitch books, but the ones that really caught my imaginaion are the Monica Edwards ones, Romsey Marsh and particularly the Punchbowl series. Anyone else read these wonderful books? They are less horsy, more farm and country based, very evocative of a life long gone.

I haven't read any Monica Edwards books but I'll look out for them, I've read books by the other authors and still enjoy them. My favourite is called The Irish RM by Sommerville and Ross, its about an Irish magistrate and his life in the early 20th century. Very funny stories about hunting, horse-dealers and general nonsense, it always makes me laugh.

Oh I adore the Monica Edwards books!

My favourite is Wish for a Pony, but they are all fantastic. Ah that takes me back...

I love Monica Edwards! At one time I had most of them and stupidly sold them on ebay for a fortune (but I had to read them all before I posted them out!

) and I have started to collect a few if I can again. Being from down south, I used to love being taken to the Punchbowl and the Romney Marsh ( always with the hope of 'meeting' my heroes - I would have been about 11!

) Did you know you can actually go and stay in the 'Vicarage' where Tamzin was meant to live?!

I also liked the older Pullein Thompsons and Ruby Ferguson, also Primrose Cummings; her 'Four Rode Home' is still a great book. Caroline Akrill is great too but don't know much about any of the 'new' authors have to admit.

Oh yes - Monica Edwards definately.

I have ALL the books - some cost me alot but are well worth it. My 12 yr old daughter is now reading them all and loving them too.

In fact my daughters are both named from characters in the Romney Marsh series (Tamsin and Marissa) - and yes I know that it is spelt TamZin in the book and that Rissa is in fact Clarissa, but we call Marissa, Rissa sometimes.

I read Wish For a Pony when I was about 12 and always said that I would call my daughter Tamzin when I grew up!

That rings a bell, you didn't buy any from paa9948 on ebay by any chance?

Not any longer unfortunately - it's now a private house and not a B&B anymore.

I would have loved to stay there - but alas too late now

What a shame, me too!

Glad it's not just me... there is a good Monica Edwards website, it will come up through google I think. The Irish RM is VERY good, and in a similar vein, Mr Facey Romfords Hounds by Surtees. Do like to older Pullein Thompsons, Plenty of Ponies is a favourite, and the Pony Club Camp/Team, One Day Event series. And Monica Dickens Worlds End series, that's fab! And K M Peytons books, one was called Fly by Night, and the other had a pony called Toad - they were good because you could see things going wrong for other people too, it wasn't all sweetness and light!

I hope one day to go to the Punchbowl, there is some speculation (again, check the fan site) about a huge road going over/around/through it - not sure of the details.

I do hope they don't spoil it with that road, it's a priceless place. If I can find them I have some old pic's of the Punchbowl and the gibbet at Hangman's Hill I think it's called; I'll pm them to you but don't hold your breath, I've got to find them first!

I loved Fly-By -Night , but my all time favourite is Four Rode Home by Primrose Cummings ( as previously mentioned , but I'm no good at using quotes - sorry ! )

I still have a copy & read it from time to time

Thanks for the info on Monica Edwards website - they were my favourite books and I found one of the old Armada paperbacks in a charity shop some time ago. Took me right back - I wanted to live on Punchbowl Farm!

I have just given my daughter my old copy of K M Peyton's "Flambards" to read. I am hoping that she will enjoy it as much as I did. I liked the Pullein-Thompsons and Ruby Ferguson too. My daughter used to enjoy the "Sheltie" series when she was very young but I can't remember who wrote them.

I also love the horsey (and all other) cartoon books by Norman Thelwell. I have nearly all of them and, again, they have been enjoyed immensely by my daughter over the years. Good stories and pictures never grow stale do they?

My favourite is probably J. Pullein-Thompson. Not that fond of the other sisters though.

As we're discussing Fly-by-Night, does anyone know if there are anymore in that series other than "The team"?

Sorry, I know this post is a bit old now, but I love Monica Edwards! My mum collected all the books when she was younger so I read them all as a kid, wrote to ME a few times (she was lovely and replied every time!), we went to see Punchbowl Farm and stayed down in Rye at the Watch Cottages (mentioned in the books) etc etc!!!

My mum is mentioned in one of her non-fiction books (the Cats of Punchbowl Farm) as she & her brother got given Soames, one of ME's Siamese cats.
