just pondering and wondered which native breed people considered the best and why? Would also love to hear from people who compete natives sj,xc, event, endurance? oh, and pics are a must!:D

I think you see more connemaras at the higher levels of eventing than other native breeds, a good connemara is a very athletic beastie indeed!

There have been some amazing welshies competing at top level sj - machno carwyn immediately springs to mind :)

For a good allround rc type horse then most natives have the ability - I have seen a couple of lovely highlands competing BE80/90 this year with success. But sometimes I think the best competition ponies are heinz 57 types with bits and pieces from a few of the native breeds. I have seen a lovely exmoor x recently who I am seriously considering - he looks like he could end up being quite a high quality allrounder :)

Connemara :D Very pretty, fantastically powerful jump and can do a fairly decent dressage test and will do showing :)

Any of them, they can all make wonderful allrounders for children or adults.

I have owned or had at livery most breeds, including a cheeky Dartmoor that was a super jumper, several Welsh As and Bs good useful ponies, a fab sec C that did great dressage and was a good jumping/event pony, a connemara that did BS and ODEs to a good level, several New Forest ponies that had amazing jumping talent and very honest natures, and a fantastic Dales pony that was good at all he did.

I feel they are so versatile and most will do any job required of them within the limits of their physique, the heavier types may not be quite as scopey but they can still do well.

Sorry no photos today.

Connemara for me! I absolutely LOVE Highlands, but Connies just suit most of my needs better. Although, I used to ride a gorgeous Highland gelding who would often go hunting, and could easily clear a 2'9 course. Also used to ride a Welsh cross Haffie (yes, Haflingers aren't native but he looked more welsh apart from the colour) and I've never seen a 13.2hh jump so big. Serious scope and was a machine XC (just not with me - I was too wussy to do XC then) :o Fell in love with my 4yo Connie though and haven't looked back since :D xx

All the Connie pictures were lovely!
I love Welshies, especially the Ds and especially the TBx s they are very athletic and are clever with it. I used to have a Welsh D x Trad cob, he could jump like a stag but was very clever and very opinionated too. I still miss him after all these years.
FDC

Probably a connemara but Welshies are fantastic too. Both breeds produce brilliant sport horses when crossed with tbs and I know of many successful tbxwelshies.

Its ok I got on to photo bucket :D you have been warned plenty of photos will follow :D

Can't beat a highland, in my opinion. Turn a hoof to anything, smartest of the bunch and a really honest, can do nature. My lad's only young so nothing too flashy in the way of photos, but:

gorgeous gorgeous pics! thanks for sharing guys and keep them coming, Im enjoying reading:D My fave so far is the highland! He looks ace!:D

Connies, but then New Forests also very good especially when crossed with TB's or Anglo Arabs. Seen a lot of nice endurance and show jumpers crossed like this.

New Forest! I have ridden 3* eventers, grade A show jumpers and GP dressage horses, but the best little horse I ever sat on was a NF mare :) She was so naturally balanced and schooled and was an utter dream to sit on.

Connies for good allrounders, but I'd also stick a welsh D/ welsh cob into the mixer because we had one who was insanely talented especially considering he was a 14hh (on tippy toes!) barrel on legs with massive feathers and a fairly plain face! He was a superb BSJA pony (regularly placed at 1m/1.05m and posted clears at 1.10m and beat all the little TB lookalikes), did all PC activities, scored 65%+ at Novice dressage and managed to go clear round 2 of the more testing BE Novice XC tracks around (Burnham Market and Blackwater Farm, but only unaff.).

He took a fair amount of 'careful' handling in the stable (aka he was too much for his small jockey unless he was in a chifney so got ridden bareback in a headcollar to the field and he barged so his stable door wasn't really opened unless 100% necessary). Top class pony though, as not many will do that height from doing very little in the way of jumping with an inexperienced 11yo on their back!

So glad you posted those pics Lolo, saw some of them on another thread and loved him ever since! Fancy doing a massive photo thread.... :D

If you want one, I will in the Picture Gallery! He really was a flying coblet, totally off his rocker and bursting with the arrogance that only a small Welshman can muster!! Lot of love for him, although he did kickstart my sister's eventing addiction...

For kids I love a Welsh A, ours is a fab little superstar and does SJ, XC, dressage, hacks out and local showing, as well as hunting and PC games. He can turn his little hooves to anything and is willing and sweet.
For a teen or adult I would have to say a connie. Never been lucky enough to have one, had a NF as a teenager who was lovely but a bit stubborn and bloody minded! Always fancied a connie but never managed yet....maybe we can get one when daughter is older...ooh that's a though if we get a big enough one I can ride it too! Yay!

Yes please! He's lush, loved the set of pics in the "jumping bloopers" thread :)

What a lovely highland!
My highland is only 2, hope he turns out half as good as yours JFTD

Thanks very much :D Mine's only 5 (all these photos are very recent), so I'm hoping he'll mature into even more of a perfect pony (in my opinion, I know I'm very biased!). Good luck with yours :)

Thanks NSN too :D

I love them all too but have a soft spot for Highlands, my little boy is too young to be ridden yet so alas no pictures of his utter gorgeousness in action! :D
