Just stumbled across a post on FB..where it seems someone is selling 45 welsh section a foals for £60 each with the caption 'if unsold will go for lab testing'. Does anyone on here know if this is true that they would? do they test on horses? or is it some helpful but sick person who has just bought a 'job lot' cheap at round up/cull time and is using peoples conscience to make a quick buck as they got stuck with them?...I have emailed the name I saw on the cross post for more details..but nothing back yet.. I thought twice about posting this as heard about a very unpopular lady/dealer on here in a post I read on here yesterday, regarding a certain someone obtaining low price/cheap horses/loan and selling them for meat..Woody was found & saved, but I know many(?) apparently are now missing/stolen on loan...with a fate that we all probably know too well...which raises the issue to cross post this or not...makes me shudder to think...

Horses are occasionally used for medical research, yes. But as far as i am aware, they are bred for that purpose. You can't just use any old pony. So hopefully, it's a lie. Poor ponies either way - they're obviously not in a very nice place. :(

Thank you...:-)I don't want to get shot down for being fluffy bunny 2011 or anything as I am realistic, regarding culls & round ups, some peoples comodities view etc...just hope it is a lie..frankly as horrible as i feel for stating this, it seems they may be better of going on elsewhere to be pts...just seems a little bit too large a number to have bred for the purpose...that would be one hell of an investment, welsh/new forrest/exmoors or whatever that would be one very well known facility for that quantity...very much hoping its a lie too:-(

It has to be a try-on. Welsh Sec A foals haven't made £60 in ages and I suspect they consider 'lab testing' to be more emotive than the meatman. Either way why the heck don't they stop over breeding the poor little mites?

there are only two premises in the UK that I know of that are able to do the sort of 'lab' testing as alluded to on that advert. containment is just way too expensive for there to be 'lab testing' on horses very much, another reason to be thankful that lab testing is so highly regulated in the UK.

eta nearly all lab animals are bred for the job (especially here, although horses not so much as it would make it way too expensive)- companies/research centres do not go out buying stolen/cheap animals for use in experiments just because they are offered them. so these ponies will not be going for lab testing, they will be going to the knackers.

I do know of a premise that uses "any old horse" for testing. They are not purpose bred but usually purchased through an agent. They are not normally wanted horses ... but in the case of this emotive appeal it doesn't ring true - it sounds like a threat made to pull at heart strings.

A friend of ours took 20 section a's on a few years back FROM a test lab who'd been testing wormers.
As far as I know, these labs breed them specifically.

When will people stop breeding ponies that have no future? Breeding needs to be licenced and regulated to stop these kinds of sales and stop the massively increasing numbers of unwanted horses and ponies in Britain today!

We were once sent the details of a breeder of horses for lab testing and the horrific procedures and data out comes of the testing. I think some one was trying to recruit us.
Horses of different ages and gender were needed for accurate results and the origins of the horses were needed, so that the testing was controlled.

Sounds like someone trying to make some quick money. These ponies go for about £20-£30 at auction.

I was under the impression that was rather a steep price...I am not looking for more by any means, but I would have thought to get them a home would be a priority,ie not for a profit whether £60 or less... but it does raise the question of controlling breeding..as we really aren't far off the situation with dogs particularly with the financial state of the country leaving so so many in need of homes/pts...yes I understand that we need to keep natives as traditionally as possible...and that we need to keep breeding good sound healthy horses of sound temperament & mind etc etc ...and also that we want to know our wormers etc are safe to use...but having looked at the horror stories on here recently over loaning /selling & stolen/missing on loan/free to good home horses offered so widely now...unscrupulous dealers...poor Woody on here that was luckily rescued....doesn't it all point to one thing that maybe we need to have some kind of licencing? maybe for breeding or for keeping/selling/dealing...horrible thing to suggest I know which will take so much of the fun out of ownership, binding us with red tape & an almost impossible policing of it all.. but when you look at the way things are going..passports being enforced etc ..cases for cruelty/welfare through neglect/ignorance...thefts where the passports don't necessarily mean ownership & not always actually matching the horse..it really does make you start to wonder which way things are going to go & whats the best way forward before its too late..

Maybe the easiest way to go about this would be for defra to ensure that all male horses (unless intended to be licensed for breeding) were gelded at a reduced price before being passported.

i think they should also with this regulate the standards of the stallions as there are so many stallions that really shouldnt be let near a mare in my opinion :o

totally agree..temperament health should come into it AS WELL as the usual musts. and Scrunchy exactly..perhaps we should email them -I'm sure it will be a nuissance but worth it in the wrong run especially to the genuine people...if its not welsh, its new forrests...the list goes on...you're right about thoroughbreds too..but then look at the racing industry...many many people involved & fuelling it are not even horsey so there fore horses will always be commodities to them..sad as it is..racing plays a massive massive part
