It's that time of year again :(. My mare has always been prone to feather mites and up until last year I was always able to control them with Dectomax jabs. However I was unable to shift her last infestation with the jab and had to clip her feather off and use Frontline spray. This worked a treat and she's been mite-free until the last spell of mild weather. I sprayed with Frontline again and this seems to have cleared them up. Only problem is, I plan to show her this year as a traditional. Her feather is magnificent and her mane is thick and now about 3 1/2 ft long. It would break my heart to hog her! The spray doesn't work when her feather's full as it simply can't get to the skin, so I'm wondering about the spot-on, behind the knee. Anyone tried this? Was it effective? Here's the girl in full (if filthy) feather.

Hi, yes I use the spot on, my cob is not too keen on the spray, think it might be the smell, so I use the spot on, I give him a dose then another one in around 10 days time, it seems to keep them at bay, hope this helps.

Thanks, does this allow you to keep his feather? How often throughout the year would you say you need it?

I didn't I'm afraid - I bought if from the vet and the cost made my eyes water ;). I might try and get a prescription next time from my friendly small-animal vet and then get it from Vetmedic or somewhere.

Try cattle Spot On from agricultural merchant, same active ingredient at fraction of price, I put 10ml down the back of each leg from a syringe and repeat 10 days later, only seem to have to use every couple of years and not needed it at all for last 4 years, works a treat if unfortunate to pick up lice as well
