Hi I have a gypsy cob who suffers from what I believe to be Feather Mites although the condition seems worse in his winter/spring field. Now I have moved him to his summer/autum field they dont seem so bad and I havent noticed him stamping his feet but he does have slightly flaky skin around his fetlocks espeically the back ones. Has anyone heard of using spot on treatment & if so where would you apply it?

I have tried using frontline spray which is very expensive & time consuming and it still comes back & various washes & sprays which dont seem very effective!

Also he seems to have what i believe to be a nodular sarcoid on his sheath there is only 1 and it doesnt seem to be effecting him should i just leave it alone??

Do you mean Spot On that you buy for cats and dogs? I think you'd have to buy a huge amount to guarantee that it would spread right through the much bigger area of a horse's skin! Unfortunately, feather mites will always come back because they drop off into the horse's bed and re-infest. My gypsy cob had the 2 injections from the vet that have to be given 10 days apart to catch the hatching eggs too. This worked brilliantly but after about 5 or 6 mnths she was re-infested. She had the double injection again but now I've clipped all her feathers off as the condition is much easier to manage that way. I appreciate your gorgeous ned (is that him in your siggy?) may be a show cob so you may not want to clip his feathers out in which case some Forum members swear by pig oil and sulphur. Never tried it myself as it sounds prehistoric and very messy! Re the sarcoid - if it was me I'd get the vets to look at it, even though the advice may be to leave it alone for now. Sarcoids can be nasty.

i bought a pump spray of frontline (100 ml)
i used it for 2 treatments 2 weeks apart and my cob has not been troubled since.it was recomended by a vet but you have to buy it for a dog because it is not licenced for horses.

try deosect many people use it for flys and lice but you can use it for mites too and is very effective and very cheap
with the sarcoid i would get vet to take a look

If you want the very long PM I do on the art of hairy horses legs, PM me and I will send it to you.

If that is your cob in the signature - yum yum - very nice, looks a lot like Stinky in build and hair.

Thanks for your replies. I will get the vet out about the sarcoid.

I did try clipping his feathers before but am worried that may encourage mud fever!

I will deosect then if that doesnt work i will try pig oil as i have heard of this before but it does sound messy!
However Theresa_F i would be grateful if you could send me that info!

Got a proper pic of my boy, prev pic was from net!

Just thought i would post an update, after trying lots of stuff, i have decided Deosect really works, its the least time consuming & hassel free way to treat it and since using it, every 2 weeks, we have had no trouble!

our boy has a sarcoid on his sheath, it has been there at least 2yrs, thats when we got him. It has taken til now to burst, all my vet said was to wait and see how it goes. It might drop off or if gets larger then he will send pics and a swab off to liverpool. All we are doing at mo is spraying it every 2 days with a antiseptic blue spray from the vets. I shouldn't worry about it now unless it causes your horse a problem. Our boy doesn't take any notice of it and it is not sore.
