Feather mites - sorry if been done to death...

My cob has already had the mite jab from the vet 3 months ago and it seemed to have worked but the last few weeks as his feather has grown with the colder weather he is itching his leg (only one?!), it is a bit scabby and sore. Is there anything I can put on it to kill the mites or is it a case of another jab and clip feathers off again? I was hoping to grow the feather ready for next years showing season so hoping there is a way around clipping them off again
 
I too paid for the injections etc...but all that worked for me was some frontline spray and then a week later he had a good bath and I sprayed him with deosect. This seems to have worked. He was driven mad with them and took a chunk out of his hoof stamping. Have had nothing more since using deosect. I think a lot of the time it's trial and error x

Did you have the course of injections or just one? I had the course but it didn't work for long
 
Thanks Missmatch - is it the cat / dog frontline spray from a pet shop? We had the course of injections (cannot for the life of me remember the name of it though)!
 
Diatomaceous earth - rub it well in like you would if chalking up feathers, leave for three days then brush out, you should then be mite free :)
 
Diatomaceous earth will kill any mites that are on there but you will need to do it every 10days or so at least. Its horrid stuff, dusty and not good for you at all if you inhale it, so honestly, dont bother!
 
The jab worked for my boy as Frontline was a waste of time unless his legs were clipped - so now I just clip his legs regularly and apply pig oil which works and is cheaper but appreciate that this is not very helpful if you want to grow his feathers.
 
Well I only used it once then once again a month later and haven't had to use it at all since (over 6 months ago) and really not any different to chalking up for a show in terms of dustiness! Better than spraying chemicals on if you don't need to...
 
The jabs I had was dectomax, 2-3 weeks apart - the spacing I understand is crucial to get the next cycle of the little blighters. It worked like a dream on my pony two years ago and I've never had mites since so never had to try any other topical products.
