Hi all!!

My chunky cob has got mites in her feathers which are driving her crazy!
I am getting someone to clip the feathers off this weekend for starters so i can get to the legs properly. I believe Frontline spray works wonders but it's very difficult to get from the vet as it's not liscensed for horses .
Does anyone have any advise what to use to get rid of the horrible things?
Once they are gone i will use pig oil to prevent them coming back.

Thanks :-)

My cob only usually suffers with mites in winter when he is stabled and I resort to having an injection from the vet. Its pretty immediate acting (sorry can't remember what its called) as its not always possible to wash his legs regularly. I also use pig oil through the winter on his feathers as we show him in traditional classes and clipping all his feather off would be a very drastic move. Through the summer he is out and bathed regularly with an insecticidal shampoo and this seems to help. x

The injection is called dectomax. It's actually a cattle wormer and it needs to be given twice after an interval of 7 - 10 day although some vets say a different time. The injection didn't work for my old lad. Frontline is a waste of money if the feathers are on in my view as it's difficult to get it in deep. I have one on the yard like this at the mo an older companion who arrived with them and I've tried everything so will now have to clip and blitz his legs as he is really stamping poor lad.

Do you have any rough cost idea for the dectomax injections?
Sounds like an option - willing to try anything to relieve my poor horse!

I will try the pig oil too

Thanks fishy and twinkley lights :-)

My vet is happy to prescribe frontline for horses. Saffy has lots of feather and I haven't needed to clip them. Spray with frontline and repeat after 10 days. Then you can use pig oil and sulphur to keep mites at bay.

We have a shire at our yard who gets mites in his giant feather, we use one dog frontline on each of his legs, works a treat and seems to last about 6 months....Be aware of using Pig oil and sulphur in this hot weather, it is oil and will heat up rapidly/burn.. :) Great stuff in the winter though.
