I have to clip my boys lovely feather off...think he has mite

Hopefully the treatment will work and will keep the little beggers away but I think I will keep him clipped through winter, just to keep an eye on things.

How long do they take to grow back? Do I need to change my name - Clipped Power? not really working!!

Hi if you PM Theresa F she may very kindly send you a PM on how to deal with and manage feather mites, so you may not need your clippers as lots of useful info is given. Good luck getting rid of the little devils.

Have you tried Dectomax? Its an injectable cattle/sheep wormer that sorts feather mites out. Although its not licenced for horses, its commonly used by vets.

ah - I have had lots of info from her which has been fantastic!

Prob is that before this we had been checking and trying to work out what the prob was, he has so much feather its hard to tell the extent of the problem, so we had to cut some away around the worst area. So, apart from looking ridiculous, I think that they need to go, get him all fixed and then manage the problem moving forward so they dont come back.

such a shame though

Yes such a shame to have to get rid of all that lovely feather.

On the bright side putting on boots and not having loads of feather stuck to the velcro will be good. Im sure if my boy lost his feather then he would go down a size in his boots

Think hard, but if you think he may have skin folds and thick areas, then yes do it and see what you have got.

You can then decide where to go. However, if you have clipped out and treated with frontline and he has not got folds, then get on and restore the hairy glory and keep with the P&S.

Farra had her front leg clipped out end of August and it is now very fluffy and should be back to her beautiful self by May.

Cairo was the same when we clipped his legs out for x-rays - 6 months later he was a "proper" clydesdale again.

Hope it all works out for you and you are back to featherpower rather than stubblypower soon.

StubblePower - love it!

I have called the vet, his old owner has been out to see him and said it looks like an infection that he had 5 years ago (incidently as a result of clipping) so I am very confused now - figured best thing to do is get an expert out. Hopefully they can give him a jab as per the post above and then we don't need to lose the feather!

Operation 'save the feather' is underway!

Hi I resorted to having my boys feathers clipped off last year and I cried I hated it but they grew back within a few months and I do the sulphur powder and pig oil thing once a month and the dectomax jabs every few months. Its the straw that kickstarts his off so I am keeping an eye on him now he is in for winter. Good luck and try not give in again, I regretted it and wont next time.
