Feather sores, crack heels, thick skin and sores

My boys legs have been doing really well, I usually clip off his feather as and when required and it’s kept things at bay. I felt a few sores so I have taken the feather on the backs of his legs off. Nothing to bad but there are a few sores and cracks on his heels. Now the feather is off I have been using hibbi scrub and simply welll gel or filtabac cream to help heel. It’s only been a few days but not seeing much improvement.
I plan on treating for mites with spot on just incase that’s what’s caused it.
He is very hairy and has skin folds from old issues before I had him.


Can anyone recommend ideas how to get the sores to heal? I was thinking perhaps warm salt water and a cream but not sure what’s best. Now the feather is off will the fresh air do the job and allow things to heal on their own or should I be using creams ect?

My cob gets something similar to this each year and I use a silver ointment (Leovet do one) which seems to heal the sores and then with repeated application, soften the scabs so they come off easier when ready

I don't know if it's still considered an acceptable solution, but we used to take the feathers off my husbands old mare and apply pig oil to her legs. It improved her skin immensely and she stopped showing signs of irritation.
Before this we almost lost her to quittor. The vet thought it highly likely the quittor was the result of her stamping her feet on the metal runner of the field shelter because of irritation. The vet gave her an injection that was supposed to get rid of mites but that made no improvement and I actually felt her whole skin surface was affected detrimentally.
In the end we gave her lower legs a close shave and applied pig oil. She stopped stamping her feet. She was a much happier horse although it was a shame to loose her feathers. As time passed it became obvious that the close shave was no longer necessary and we let her have feathers for the Winters!
We did not apply the pig oil very often but I can't remember the exact routine now.

I wouldn't keep washing it, water and dermatitis really don't mix. Silver ointment does work well ime

I had this with my mare. She has awful deep creases. Firstly do treat for mites as you won’t improve things if that’s what’s causing the scabs.

My vet gave me some antibacterial shampoo called Coatex (it’s made for dogs, you can buy it from pet shops) and said to really scrub to get all the scabs off and use warm water. I then had to dry legs thoroughly with paper towels, then spray with blue hygiene spray. her legs were fine within a week.

I have used sudocrem with success in the past but now use udder cream which seems to work slightly better and is definitely easier to use. I wash initially with a very dilute solution of hibiscrub but after that will only wash when necessary if I need to get rid of a build up of cream.

Personally, I would go easy on the Hibiscrub as it is quite harsh. Sudocrem is a brilliant barrier and healing cream.

On Blue I use dermasol that’s great at removing the scabs , sudocrem and if they are bad I have them lasered .

Treat for mites but I don't go overboard on any water based treatment because I think it can irritate the skin more. Udder cream is a great moisturiser with sudocream for any sores

Pour on for cattle is the best thing to use if you suspect mites .

Farriers M & S cream is brilliant stuff, invented for mallenders but works on sores and wounds too.

Dectomax injection to rule out mites and then a good barrier cream. No hibiscrub etc. I'm thinking it's Strawberry - he's quite pale skinned? Are you sure it's not LV (triggered by sunlight)?
