I am a relative newbie on here but I am getting really feb up with the style of certain posts recently.

I always thought the point of the forum is to help each other where we can, to discuss things we find interesting, to congratulate each other when things go well and commiserate with each other when things go badly. I don't post on everything but I make a point of posting if I think I have advice for someone who is looking for it, or if I can say 'well done' to someone who has good news to report, or 'really sorry' to someone who has sad news to report.

I am fed up with a whole lot of posts recently, coming from relatively new members, shouting about one issue and one issue only. The posts tend to be on the polemic side, alternating between calling the HHO community to a call of arms because we are all united in our dislike of X, making claims in all manner of inappropriate ways and having a go at anyone who disagrees with unpleasant personal comments.

I enjoy (maybe more than most) a healthy debate, but I also want to interact with polite, kind and interested people who will also take an interest in other aspects of horse riding and not just their one pet crusade. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, but I do expect them not to hijack the entire forum with their ideas. The hunting community doesn't do this even though this is the HHO forum, I don't see why anyone else should!

Rant over.

The majority of us are helpful and polite. Please don't tar us all with the same brush. I agree that there are posters like that but I tend to ignore them and reply to topics that I feel able to offer advice on or am interested in.
Stick with us, we are OK really!!

I didn't intend to suggest that most or even a lot of people on here are like that. I have made some great friends on HHO and loads of people have helped me. But there seems to be a spate of these kinds of posts from the same 2-3 people on the same topic...

i think that in life, there are people who are deliberately provocative... and on a forum it is easier to let that side of them 'out', as there is the anonymity there.

ignore them/block them and carry on smiling

I know you cant mean me, as I am definately all sweetness and light

Just dont open the posts you dont like, if you do accidentally dont reply to any posting, there are lots of sections to choose from on here, I agree though that certain posts which are posted in the Lounge should actually be in Soapbox.

I suppose we all have issues that are close to are hearts or that we feel strongly about, and will post our feelings accordingly, and somtimes it will get heated and things will be said in the heat of the moment. I myself would probably say more on a subject in RL than on here. As in RL we will never all agree on a subject, that would be sooo boring.

I don't mind the disagreement, in fact I think disagreement is a great thing. On this particular issue I actually haven't made my mind up so it's very interesting to have discussions and hear other points of view (which is why I have posted on it and read the threads).

What I do mind is bitchiness, turning a disagreement into a personal issue, using an emotive issue to promote external events and profit making organisations, and using this forum to promote one's pet ideas.

Pedantic: No, of course I don't mean you!!!! You are all sweetness and light indeed (despite your narrow focus on trivial aspects!)

Whats the use of having a rant, why not come out and say who you are having a rant about. Sorry but it seems most horsey people are bitches and yes a disagreement can get personal. that's why I own my own place, had plenty of the nasty stuff when I was a livery. I always found if your face didn't fit or they thought you were not their sort, your life was hell.

Point me in the direction of the posts you are talking about, so i can understand, was it the fireworks post if so i missed somthing.

It's the rollkur posts, posted almost exclusively by new members, who only have an interest in this topic, who only seem to post in each other's topics, shortly followed by a post on a new series of lectures on the topic or a call to go look at a pay-and-display website. Many other people have also posted on this topic, which is fair enough and has generated good discussions, but I just don't like the attitude of some posters.

Thank you both for the sweeties...I fill more chilled now (well, have been mucking out in the rain so that has cooled me off!!

)

And have a ferroro rocher...I'm handing them out today because I've decided to get festive.

Yep...I like a laugh, a debate....a different point of view. Sometimes I get fed up with the whole thing because some people just seem to want to insult or inflame arguments.....but strangely enough find myself drawn back because I do genuinely wonder what some people and their horses are up to and how they are getting on.

Take a deep breath honey....its too early for wine (even for me

Great so most of us are bitches - thanks very much

I think you are wrong anyway

I think most groups of people can be cliquey and/or bitchy whether they are horsey, dog, rugby, school mummies etc . I don't think horsey people are any more bitchy than any other group.

That's a good word "polemic". I think that might be my word of the day for today

Seriously though, this forum has always been that way. Before the hunting ban, the forum used to be covered in those sorts of posts. The Hunting Forum itself is really quiet and tame now compared to how it used to be - there is a reason why HTML doesn't work in there...the facility was removed because of the arguments and abuse of it!!

As in real life, there are some subjects which are very emotive and that people feel strongly about. It's just easier on here to come across as preaching because you can write an entire post without being interrupted, as you would be in RL if you were talking face to face.

The forum is big enough though that you can take part in the discussions you do want to be involved in, and ignore those you don't. As a rule, I ignore the discussions about French rescue (when they were allowed, anyway
smirk.gif
) because I know nothing about it, and also those which seem to consist mainly of slagging off SJers because I have no interest in it. I know which posts you are talking about and it's an issue that I feel strongly about, so I like to get involved in those posts. Hopefully I manage to hold a normal "conversation" without shouting too much though
wink.gif

Keep getting involved, it's healthy to have a good debate! Not everyone is going to agree on everything but it's always interesting to hear different sides of the discussion.

Calm down dear.

I like your posts, you're not scared of upsetting people.
grin.gif
However, if you're going to be like that, you have to not let anyone upset you. Let 'em get on with it and join different threads.
