Fed up with broken horses. Want to pack it in...

Defo going to re-think having thoroughbreds though and maybe get a cobby thing next which is less liable to break!?

..and what I thought too!

But my 15h welsh has had colic surgery a splint fracture and suspected suspensory on front. I'm currently bringing him back into work from suspensory - he was sound after 6 weeks box rest but then ******ed it up in the field - althouhg it is hardly noticeable he shows 1/10 lamness on the lunge (you can't feel anything under saddle so vet has said to carry on walk work). He also has stringhalt on his hinds so i'm not sure any of his legs are insurable anymore!

Hang on a minute - You've seen a pic of hyper-extension of his fetlocks and gone onto self diagnose him via the internet into retirement?

Titch it still sound and competing isn't he?

Only just seen this! sorry! Yes, he is still sound, but there is defo something not right, and I don't want to ignore gut feelings. He literally rests his hind legs all the time, literally constantly. It's not normal. I have posted on the DSLD yahoo group with pics and slow mo vids, and they all without exception say I should think seriously about getting some ultrasounds done on his hind legs....

Not saying he has got it yet, but there is defo something going on... I just don't trust any vets in my area!!!

I feel your pain, another one who could quite cheerfully give up!!! I have 1 field ornament, she retired 4 years ago at 15, far too early. I bought a 4yo, she's 8 now nearly 9, she last competed in June 2012 and still no nearer to riding. Just heartbreaking aren't they xx

Then get him off to a vet you do trust , I can't bear it when I start thinking like this I just have to know .
There must be a horse practise somewhere near enough to to you can trust.
It's the not knowing that drives me mad once I know I can cope and meet whatever it is head on.

Miracles do happen. My boy was diagnosed with DJD in his hock and a very bad SI injury due to a field injury. After thousands of pounds worth of tests he was basically written off and we thought he would be pts before Christmas. In the New Year he suddenly came sound, passed a full lameness test and is now under saddle. Something I dared not hope for. It's wonderful to see him back in work.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that you have such good luck with yours.

I've just made the decision to retire my horse, he's 13 and has navicular. He has been on 1 bute a day for the past 18 months and has been doing ok. But lately he has felt awful to ride and I'm not enjoying riding him, just for the sake of hacking him. I don't feel comfortable giving him more bute, just to be ridden. So after a lengthy chat with my farrier, he's going to take his hind shoes off and I'm going to retire him. Not sure how long his retirement will be atm. This is the 3rd horse on the trot that has broken. I'm not getting another horse, my children have their pony and I'm going to concentrate on them now. Horses really are heart breakers! :(

OP why dont you trust any vets in your area, North West? which vets have you used? how about traveling for ultrasound? I use Ashbrooks but when needed an MRI went somewhere in Yorkshire instead of Leahurst, they also did another ultrasound. it was a great place. it wasnt far in the trailer (an hour?)

Have you thought about a barefoot rehab for your horse?

A few members on here have been able to bring their (now fully sound) horses back into work, when it had looked hopeless before the rehab. It might be worth PM'ing bikerchickone as she's definitely gone through this with her horse.

I'm not fed up just on the way to being heart broken, my girl has been diagnosed with arthritis and had corticosteroid injections. After 2 months she seems to have slipped back. Im going to cover all bases let her supplement work, get back/tack checked, but im scared to try and school her i just don't want to know in a way.
I won't be avoiding it of course and if we only get how ever long hacking then that is fine, but i'm distraught at losing my dressage horse at the age of 9 and half a year after getting her.

I know i will get another eventually when i have retired her but it hurts so much. I hear good stories and haven't given up yet but can't help thinking about the negative.
