Hi,

I am moving my horse on to DIY, she is currently on full livery and is being fed regular chaff, standard mix, cool mix and sugar beet 24hr.

I want to provide her with a bit more nutrients and have been considering feeding her Mollichaff showshine, Dodson & Horrel conditioning mix, sticking with the sugar beet, garlic granules and of course lots of carrots and apples :)

My question is, do you think the above is ok to feed her and if so what weight of each? She is 3 and a half, 15"3 and is currently being exercised for about half an hour a day 4-5 days a week. She is an ex race horse (3 races).

Thank you :)

When you say that you want to give her more nutrients, who do you mean exactly? Is she losing weight so you want to give her more calories to get more condition on her?

As in I want to make sure I am giving her all the goodness she needs. As it's coming into Winter I'm worried she will lose weight, I can already see her ribs, which I have been told is normal in a TB.

Sorry I am new to this, I have only ever shared horses, so have never had to decide what feed to give.

If you want to ensure she maintains condition, then you need to make sure that she gets as much good quality haylage/hay as she will eat - that is actually more important for weight gain than the bucket feed you give. If you do find she needs a conditioning feed as well, then I would avoid feeding mix as these usually contain a lot of cereals that may hype her up. One option would be to give her chaff and beet alongside a feed balancer - the balancer will contain all the vit/mins she needs plus good quality protein and a probiotic yeast which will help her digest fibre properly and make the most of the feed she gets. If she needs more than that, then you could add some form of oil-rich supplement - micronized linseed, Outshine, Equijewel etc.
