Hi guys. Looking for some advice as I seem to get a little overwhelmed by all the different feeds, supplements and balancers.
My 13yr old warmblood has been with me now for 4 months. When I bought him he was over weight and unfit. Now his weight is down and he is much fitter. (Such a lovely boy, took me a long time to find him)
I feed him -
1 handful of hifi lite chaff
1 scoop of high fibre nuts
superflex supp
protexin gut balancer
He is out on good grass during day, then back into not so grassy paddock at night with a bit of haylage mixed with soaked hay (allergies)
His feet are awful. Which I knew before I bought him. So I've my farrier recommend Kevin bacon hoof formula (I have used the kb dressing the last 2 months) has any one used this?? Any reviews?
when it arrived I looked at ingredients and it seems to be a 'balancer' with added vits and supps. I'm totally confused as to carry on with his feed as normal? To stop supps and give kb formula or both? Or do I try something else? I was thinking about giving him a respitory supp as he does have dust allergies and gets runny nose quite a bit. So are there balancers that will do all or will I end up giving him more than he needs? Or will I end up giving him lots of supps when I get that in one feed? Also there are random ingredients which look like E numbers? I wouldn't want anything to heat him up as he feels very well in him self!
So any advice would be great :-)

try reducing his sugar intake for at least three months,

keep him in the paddock with less grass and feed soaked hay,

HiFi no added sugar

and try prohoof supplement

if needed add speedi beet in

the chances are you will start to see a difference by the end of this time and if you continue it will keep improving

Hi - I have a warmblood who has terrible hooves. He is fed the correct diet to improve and help (before there are reems of posts telling me what to feed him). I started to use KB supplement about 8 months ago and we saw a noticeable improvement about 3 months after starting. We also use the KB tar dressing, which I think really helps (especially when horses are out full time, as mine has been due to injury). I dropped the dose in his food to three times a week, rather than daily, after my vet basically said that feeding too much supplement would be wasted as the body could only absorb/use so much, and I guess the same could be said of any other supplement you are giving - i.e difficult to overdose in a harmful way.

He sounds a lot like my horse :)

I put my horse on to Formula4Feet back in May, it looks like a feed but is a supplement, they don't need much of it, that and a good farrier have really made some great improvements to her feet.

I also rub cornucrescine into her coronet band (farrier tip, who knows if is true, it can' hurt!) use Kevin Bacon products actually on her feet but have never used the one you're referring to, they are probably similar in content though.

For breathing supplements, my horse has mild COPD, have had great success with Respimin and also Secreta ProMax, the latter is less expensive, my vet recommended it. Secreta Pro Max looks like a feed too.

Joint supplement, I use Premierflex Plus, good value, seems to work for my horse.

When I got her a year ago she seemed like a fat old dobbin only suitable to take an old lady(me) on hacks, now she is fighting fit and going hunting with my daughter (on the right days, all conditions being good for her)

I have a warmblood on a low sugar diet who had bad feet. I used the KB which helped a bit for a while. His feet then started to go back to being slightly problematic. My vet looked into it with help from Edinburgh Veterinary Hospital and it is thought he is oversensitive to selenium in the diet. The specialist at Edinburgh thinks most horses in the UK do not need a selenium supplement and they tend to get it added to feeds and other supplements so end up with too much. Excess selenium can damage hooves and even at moderate levels in horses that are more sensitive it can cause problems. I reduced the selenium in the diet, and swapped the blue chip pro for formula for feet as it is selenium free. He now has no problems at all with his feet ;-)

Thanks for the great info guys. It does all get a little confusing. The grass that he is on is rich so there fore full of sugar. So I do try to not leave him out on that grass for too long. I would love to give him hay more. But can't with allergies. I'm on the hunt at the mo for the best quality hay I can find around here to see if that's makes a difference?? Nearly finished the bag if hifi, so will buy the no sugar one next time. That's interesting to know that you can't really over dose on supplements. And that they can only absorb a certain amount into the body. I was told it will take time to see a difference with any hoof supps. It's just hard to know what's the best for him with out trying I suppose. I will ask at feed store about blue chip pro for formula and the secreta stuff. Is it me or does most feed their horses lots of extras? Just seems like so much supps. That's why I thought that there might be a one for all type thing! I'm not sure in all the crazy ingredients that some feeds and stuff contain. It's all a little new to me as its been quite a few years since owning my own horse. So trying very hard to do my best as we all do with little help. Which is why I love this forum so much. Thanks again for help and info.

I would highly recommend pro hoof suppliment from progressive earth ( not the naf one) it contains everything you need so can be fed with just fast fibre or speedibeet

I think you can fall into a trap with supplements, I fight the urge to add a new one every day! I guess I feel better about the hoof and breathing ones because they look like a feed and my horse thinks they are haha
