This is my 3rd winter with my cob who only needs feed in winter when he comes in
1st winter i fed chop and unlimited hay as advised by previous owner- no problems.
2nd winter my instructor suggested i feed him alpha a with a scoop of sugarbeet - he got very fat and had to spend all summer muzzled and strip grazed

So this year ive bought dengie hi fi lite - but on reading it theres not much in it?

His first owner just fed him chop - doesnt he need extra vitamins too?

He is a 15 hands cob in light work - coming up to 9 years old.

I want to ask you because i dont trust feed companies not just to sell to make profits?

why don't you try feeding him a balancer, like top spec lite then you know his getting all the vits and mins he needs and ab lib hay along with your turnout and then hopefully you won't get the weight gain - which is primarily what sugar beet is meant to do.

Ad lib hay if he isn't putting on weight.

Look at vitamin/mineral licks, balancers or multivitamin supplements (I use pink powder with a handful of chaff) if you want to ensure he is having the correct levels.

:)

Most cobs I know in light work don't need any feed. In fact my TB in light work doesn't need any feed. So long as they have grazing and good quality forage most vitamins will be in that. But if you want to feed Hi Fi Lite is more than sufficient you are right most feed companies are in it for the money.

If you're worried about him gaining weight, I'd go steady with the hay, weigh it out and just feed a balancer for his vits. Could even put a salt lick on his stable. This is what I do for my id, determined to make use of winter to get weight off him, so I can relax a bit more next spring!!
