Moving to a new yard on Saturday which requires me to provide my own feed.

I have a 16.2hh ID good doer who would live on fresh air (but I would feel so bad lol)

Was thinking 'Speedibeet' and 'Safe and Sound'. He is currently fed sugarbeet, chaff and barley.

He is in lightwork and not that much overweight at the moment.

if he's a good doer, i'd stop with the barley! i'd give him a broad-spectrum balancer, with hi fi if necessary to stop him scoffing it too fast, and that would be all if his forage is good quality and the workload's low. if he's being worked hard though, and started feeling a bit lacking in energy, i'd add alfa a.

Mine are both on Happy Hoof and speedibeet - don't need to add supplements as its all in the Happy Hoof (cob is lammi). Both are good doers and do a fair amount of work when there is no snow ie everyday both schooling and hacking and they are doing fine on it. WB has to have same as can't be bothered to have 2 seperate sacks of chaff etc

Try a balancer like Top Spec Lite. Then you can feed virtually nothing else and see how it goes. You'll be sure that he is getting everything he needs and can increase/decrease other feeds as you need to. It might seem a lot of money per bag, but trust me, I have been feeding Top Spec to my boy for 5 years and everywhere we go I get compliments. It's worth every penny.

Safe and sound and speedibeet would be fine for a good do-er. You could probably drop the speedibeet in summer. Definately not barley!

Hey hun - C is on top spec lite mixed in with a handful of hifi lite - there are barely any calories in either of them but it has all the vits and minerals he needs and he still thinks he's getting a feed.

The only thing with safe and sound is that you have to feed in larger quantities if you want them to get all the vits and minerals they need so perhaps you may want to add a multi vitamin supplement.

I've got a 16hh ID mare who's also a good doer

. She's been on Happy Hoof and Hi Fibre Cubes for over two years but I'm just switching her to Apple Chaf and Top Spec Lite cos she seems to be getting bored with the Happy Hoof

She's also on haylage although I've still managed to maintain her weight

Cut out the barley.

My good doer gets fast fibre, mollychaff and a seaweed supplement with high fibre haylage. I have to be careful what I feed him this as he is intolerant to many things.

haylage/hay, chaff and a feed balancer would be great for your horse. Or the sugarbeet and chaff with a balancer if he is needing a few more calories.

A horse should have 1.5-2% of its bodyweight in feed a day.
It depends on what chaff you use, some have vits and mins added in and some do not. If it does, reduce the amount of balancer to avoid giving your horse too much vitamins/minerals and wasting your money.
