Hey Everyone! Just after some feed advice. My mare is 15yrs old but acts like a 5yr old. She gets worked 5-6times a week for about an hour. We do cross country and show jumping. She can be VERY fizzy!! I currently feed her mollichaff calmer, its supposed to be a complete feed. I just dont think its right for her. Any advice? Someone at the yard suggested using "Topspec". Has anyone else used them? thanks guys. xxx
 
I would try top spec original, or baileys lo-cal, with a mollichaff - the amount you would have to feed of the mollichaff calmer to get the full 'dose' of the vits and mins in it I think is quite high.

try lo-cal, moli original and naf magic - nice and easy to feed and if she needs more calories then add sugar beet.

[/ QUOTE ] Can you say exactly why you feel it isn't right for her - that will help us work out what sort of feed would be suitable.
 
Her coat isnt as shiny as it previously was. And she had lost a little muscle condition. Her work load hasnt changed, so I didnt think it was due to exercise change. She is much more on edge too.
 
I presume Mollichaff clamer is still mollassed chaff? How feed companies can advertise something covered in sugar as a calmer is beyond me! Personally I'd change her to a non-mollassed chaff, something like Hifi. Topspec is a good conditioning feed as well as balancer so whether to feed it or not depends on how she is condition wise and if she's a good or poor doer. Personally I'd try her on a low energy balancer, something like Bailey's lo-cal as this shouldn't make her so fizzy. You could alos try adding oil to her feed as this is good for slow release energy and stamina rather than fizziness.
 
Just wondering, how much hay and grazing does she get? If she's lost condition I'd worry a bit about worms, what's your worming plan like? Or possibly stomach ulcers as these could make her edgey and cause poor coat, lack of condition etc as she won't be getting all the goodness out of her feed. (Don't want to scare you, there are lots of other reasons it could be as well).
 
PaintedLucky- Thank you. I will give Topspec a call tomorrow and see what they recommend me trying her on. She is a good doer and not an overly fussy eater. I called the vet out last week to see if they thought anything else was going on. She seems fit and well apart from the previously mentioned problems. Its all happened since feed was changed. Her condition isn't bad, its just not as fab as it was before. She is on a good worming programme too. Thank you for your help. x
 
So what was she on before the Mollichaff Calmer? I presume whatever it was gave her a shiny coat and good muscle condition, but fizzed her up too much?

A few more questions - is she kept in or out, what does she get in the way of hay/haylage/grazing, and is she a good doer or poor doer?
 

She was on Hi Fi Lite and allen and page calm and condition. She is kept out at the moment but coming in for feed and a hay net. Grazing is quite good. She is a good doer. x
 
Try alpha a oil and just high fibre nuts coz you say she is a could doer but with the oil that will help coat ang give that little bit of engery for the work she is doing!
