I am happy to announce my retired boy is moving back to my yard,he has lost alot of condition over the winter at his retirement home and now after much soul searching i have decided he should come back to my yard for a bit of tlc and hopefully live out the rest of his days with me.

(The only reason he was moved was the yard i was on at the time he retired wouldn't let me turn him out as much as i wanted, but now i have moved to a great place with lots of turnout)

So i was wondering what kind of feed plan i should put him on to help him gradually increase weight, bearing in mind that he has lost some teeth -
I was thinking of things like soya oil and micronized linseed. He can't eat hay so i will be giving him readigrass instead. And i was going to give him three feeds a day.

Any advice or experiences with oldies is much appreciated, so excited to have him back!!

one of mine is a tbx & hes 28 this spring! last winter he lost far too much weight, was a reality check as we forget how old he really is!
so this winter we have been keeping him that extra bit toasty with more under rugs so that his feed is going towards his condition and not towards keeping him warm which has really worked! he is also on hifi senior, baileys senior mix and calm and condition and is turned out every day, he likes his routine! the veteran mixes and chaffs seem to be agreeing with him and even if i say so myself he looks fantastic considering his age!!!
finding the right feed for weight gain that works for your horse is trial and error and very confusing once you start looking into it!
i tried linseed and soya oil with my mare before christmas who lost a load of weight through hunting but i found that you need to feed a lot of these to make any difference at all. so i experimented with different feeds till i found one that worked. i have also used NAF pink powder in the past which helped and may be something else to consider?
hope you find something that works for your boy!
