In need of some advice!

My warmblood is currently fed on a dipper of nuts, chaff and 1/2 a dipper of sugarbeet, he's been on this since we've had him(just over a year now) and the dealer from where we bought him from also fed him this but he was only in light work. He was only with the dealer for a few weeks and we were unable to find out what he was fed at his previous home.

I find that when I bring him into harder work he begins well but then becomes a bit laid back in his work. He's not a lazy horse but it would be nice if he could have a bit more spring in his step without going too crazy!

Would it help if instead of nuts I gave him competition mix or would there be little difference? Any ideas? Just don't want to swap and change his feed if it's of no benefit.

(little about him!- he's a 16.2hh 11 year old warmblood showjumper, currently jumping newcomers/foxhunter frequently)

Assuming his teeth and back are fine, I would add a cup of micronised linseed to his feed.

If he needs more energy during hard work, oats to be fed after work would help.

I'd try the linseed first. It's amazing stuff. Great for the coat, joints, gut, feet etc!

If he looks good and his weight is good then I would just add a balancer or vit/min supplement. Sometimes when horses lack energy, it can be down to lack of vits/mins.

Adding additional energy to his feed may also increase weight (if the energy isnt used) so just be wary of this ;)

thanks for all the help!

He's a compact horse making him look rounder than he actually is but he definately doesn't need to gain any more weight so i think I'll try a vitamin supplement and see how that goes, thanks guys :)
