hi

Need help pls.

Horse cant take alfalfa (turns into a freak) cereals (nutty) high starch (unrideable)

So been feeding unmollassed sugar beet, easy rider (chaff no mollasses, no barley, no nothing) and also linseed meal and soya flakes.
Now - been reading about soya and am thinking need something else so been looking at Copra meal - as need something conditioning but low starch and no cereal.

any comments??????

cheers

Horse is 16hh ISH (7/8th TB) and lives out 24/7 with adlib hay clipped well rugged and in med level work, doing dressage.

My horses get wound up if I feed them molasses or cereals etc. I feed them Primero Total Equine which is a complete feed with vitamins etc.. Although it is not cheap, you do not need to feed a lot of it so works out quite reasonable and no need to add supplements. If I want to bulk it out, I add speedi beet and Hi Fi Lite. They have always maintained good condition on this. To put condition on in the past, I've used Baileys Outshine which worked well. (I tried conditioning mix once after one horse had a virus, and she lost weight as she was so wound up and was constantly running about!)

I used to use boomerang copra, it has a high oil content and is made from coconut, the bags aren't cheep but because you soak it last for ages. I found it to be excellent for gaining condition in poor horses and also for those in constant work. I fed it as a stand alone feed, must have been good cause the dogs tried to steal it from the horses feedbowls :D
