My boy currently gets fed ad lib hay mixed with haylage, a hand full of alpha a oil and a handful of cool mix, supplemented with garlic and a multi vitamin.

He now has enough condition although he is still growing ;) and I am considering putting him on a feed balancer instead of his hard feed. I believe this will give him all the v&m and prebiotics etc he needs and so in the long run will work out economical.

have other people done this? Which would you recomend?

To be honest, if your horse is in good condition on what he gets now, then he probably doesn't need a balancer, and the general vit/min supplement that he is on now will do fine. Probiotics/prebiotics are useful if you think a horse's gut condition may be comprised in some way - ie after illness, antibiotic treatment, period of stress, high cereal/low fibre diet or just general poor condition. However, if your horse is in healthy condition on a good diet and has no recent illnesses, treatments or poor diet, then prebiotics/probiotics may make no difference at all!

You can probably cut out the cool mix and just give the Alfa A Oil and vit/min supplement - just increase the Alfa A Oil if he starts to lose condition.
