do you think my traditional cob should have a feed balancer. he is stabled at night and out at grass which i let grow as foggage strip grazing as he is putting on weight.hes in at 4 and gets4lb soaked hay hand fullof high fibre cubes handful dengie hi fi. then later on he gets 4lb soaked hay. no hay in morning straight out to graze. any suggestions rode 4 times a week.

If personally cut feed to handful of your dengie and a low cal balancer. Hi fibre nuts do contain vits and mins but need a higher quantity and if he's gaining weight (which isn't needed ??) I'd not increase.

If you want to feed a balancer, I would say feed that and nothing else! Mine has top spec lite and 5 kilos hay a day, and that is it. Works for us, as long as she gets a few good gallops in and never gets rugged, she stays reasonably trim.

I have put my son's Sec A on a feed balancer for exactly that reason, he was on limited hay only and bare turnout and I was concerned that he wasn't getting enough vits and mins.

Started using 'Pure Balance' 3 weeks ago and I am certain it has helped with his weight loss. If you fill out the details on their website, they will work out a feed plan for you. Mine was in exactly what I had planned to do. The feed is delivered to your door very quickly and they are offering 50% off until the end of November via their facebook page.

To know what he is missing you need to know what is in the forage.

If it isn't possible to do a forage analysis then just use a good general supplement.

Not sure what the high fibre cubes are for? If he is a good doer then HiFi and a supplement should do the job.

When I first got Markie he was out of work and just got a mug of Baileys lo cal (no 14) balancer and a handful of Fibergy chaff. The mug is the recommended amount for good grazing.
Since I've had him, he's come back into work and looks fabulous. I do now add Fast Fibre to his feed (1kg split over 2 feeds) and, as the grazing isn't as good now, he has a mug and a half of Baileys (will increase to 2 mugs when, and if, the darned grass stops growing). I've had him since June and only just into his 2nd bag of Baileys and 2nd bag of Fibergy.

Glad it's working for you.

It has wheat feed (aka "Thirds") for a base - that's used around here to put weight ON. I used it with my old boy when he was ill and lost condition one year. But it's often a base for feeds marketed at laminitics. I do wonder why?
