Since I moved yards I have had to buy feed off the YO and she gets in Dengie and Saracen mainly. I've always fed Alfa-A light (in the winter and small rations during the summer as something to put his supplements in) so that isn't a problem, but last winter I fed Spillers high fibre cubes so can't have them any more.
I saw this is a good opportunity to review what I'm feeding my horse so used the Saracen feedcheck service and they sent me a detailed sheet of what to feed him, it wasn't unlike what I'm already feeding anyway. They advised me to feed 600g of Alfa-A light a day, and 8kg of hay at night (he's turned out in the day). He also has a joint supplement for his ringbone and I give him garlic and NAF Pink Powder to ensure he gets all his nutrients.
But Saracen also advised me to feed him their new balancer, Stamm 30 instead of the Pink Powder, even though it is supposed to be for performance horses, breeding stallions and lactating mares. My horse is in light/moderate work and is a good doer and slightly overweight from the summer. I really don't think this is suitable for him, I'd personally rather feed a powder balancer than a pelleted one as they appear to have all the vitamins with less calories, is that correct?? When the grass isn't so good I'll introduce some high fibre pencils from the Saracen range and some sugar beet, but for now he's perfectly fine on Alfa A and plenty of hay. He isn't good on anything heating, he is best on a high fibre diet and thats how I'd like to keep it.
So is pink powder enough as a balancer, or can anyone recommend anything better??
