right currently my horse (whos 18 this year) gets fed pegasus chaff, speedi beet and pasture mix. i have been told that pasture mix is really bad for their teeth and i am going to change the pasture mix to something else, however i cant decide what?

at the moment all i can think of is a veteran mix, pony nuts, economy mix or leisure mix?

any help would be greatly appreciated as i jsut cant decide, any other feeds i should consider?

going out of my mind here lol. shes in light - medium work id say. gets ridden 6 days a week if i have the time with the light etc, but now its getting lighter at night this means longer schooling sessions and longer hacks.

thanks

Why do you think pasture mix is bad for the teeth? Does your horse look well and have enough energy for what you do with her on your current programme or is she over or under weight? I can think of reasons to change from pasture mix, but being bad for the teeth is a new one on me.

Bethie - got told by a dentist its bad for them. she is slightly over weight if anything but i think this is with standing in more and doing less ridden work because of the weather, although i did cut her feed. she looks very well i think for her age anyways (will post recent photo) and i think this might be sending her slightly loopy and putting too much weight on when i up it for more energy.

no i hadnt either thats why im confused :s and why i posted

shes not overweight just a little tubby with not being worked, however weather picked up we are back on track so shes losing it already. and i have cut her hard feed.

Well I think she looks really well and she's a credit to you. If she holds weight without the mix in I would drop it completely, you can always play about with the type of chaff and/or amount of sugar beet she's having if you do need a bit more energy and want to keep the feed more fibre based. What I would think about adding is a tablespoon of salt per day if she doesn't have it all ready or doesn't use a salt lick, and consider adding a multi vitamin and mineral supplement as she *may* be lacking a full daily complement of vit/mins depending on what your hay and grazing is like and whether you feed the full recommended amount of the pasture mix for her height/weight.

thanks a lot will try that

il drop the mix and add salt along with a supplement. so what do you recommend as a vit + min supplement ?

she doesnt have a salt lick shes not keen on them, they have a garlic one instead.

That's news to me, have only heard good reports about Pasture Mix!!

Have you thought about Dodson & Horrell Sixteen Plus? Has all the extra nutrients older horses need. I've been feeding it to mine for years now.

thats it i couldnt think of its name 16+ thats the one saw it in the tack shop a while ago. lol. so is it good do you think? so that has everything in so would mean no supplements? im sure i read the back of the bag and it said it had everything in for joints etc

Yes, my mare is doing great on it, she's 31 now and I've been feeding her it for ages now. She also gets hi fi and fibre beet. I would highly recommend it.
