Hi All,

Just wondering how much is too much ?

When adding oats to give them that extra 'oomf' factor - lot of online reading says just add a handfull etc as you need it.

I have Moo on power and perform and mollichaff - and adda handfull of straight oats to it also to help give him a bit more zazazoom. I know you cant alter basic temprement which is what it does come down to - however would be interested to know how oats much others feed ?

many thanks x

Tx

I was reccommended 1 round scoop to my very laid back cob, it gave him a something but not much. The only thing that has worked is red cell!

Hi

thanks all - he is currently on about a mug of oats x 2 per day.

Had tried Equimins Equi Red and also Horse First Back To Form as both said to be rocket fuel- Cant say I noticed much difference TBH.

Is red cell similatr to Equi Red? x

Ive not heard of those 2, but I know red cell is very highly rated and a lot of people have said it is like rocket fuel I tried everything with my lad, comp mixes, various brands of oats and general supplements but red cell seems to be the thing that has changed him. It did take about 2 months till I saw full effects tho so you have to persever.

You'd need to feed a lot more oats than that to get any real impact if very laid back

I used to feed mine a round scoop of turbo oats, which were only just noticeable

Red cell does give them a bit more pep and that's my staple for competing. However if they are being very lethargic I also feed flaked peas, and this has far more effect than oats.

To be honest - its a temprement/motavational issue -

He loves hacking and is good out and about - usually forward going most of the time outside.

In the school he just does not see the point in it, so I have to be really carefull not to do too much and to keep it good for him with plenty praise and fun! Which does work.

Will try the redcell. No harm I suppose except bank balance.

Just want him to be a bit more perky etc so a bit more enjoable for my daughter riding him in school.

I have had him out hunting once and he was a star - really enjoyed himself and quite strong. hoping to get out again when weather improves.

Try Immunall too, given to the racers on a yard I used to work at, they had it for 3 days before a race - purely herbal and boy oh boy did we know when they'd had some!

Remember its a cob they are not known for zoom. If you want zoom get an ex-race horse at about 4 to 6 they usually have enough zoom to scare the pants off you. At least that's what i found out one day to my horror when i was talked into taking one out on the gallops.

This sounds exactly like my cob, in all fairness I have to have a lot of lessons to figure out the best way to work him in the school (as he is also a happy hacker and loves XC, but hates flat work), but the red cell has contributed to him a btter general health, and being much brighter in himself and being more enthusiastic has ment I can work him better in the school, even if hacks are a bit hair raising at times days

.

Its worth a go at least.

I don't have access to any fancy foods, so I feed whole oats and beet pulp to everything (plus whole barley to the hard keepers). But they only get it in the winter as an extra to keep them warm. Plus I don't usually ride them until the spring unless we have a few freaky warm days. None of them seem to have any extra oomph if I do ride. LOL until a snowmobile comes flying across the pasture then they sure have some energy

Also to add that if you feed oats, I was told to feed a balancer or general supplemnet due to the calcium or something....not quite sure????
