My horse has Cushings & is not a big eater & will leave feed if he doesn’t want it. I have him on Baileys Keep Calm, not because he needs to be kept calm but because he seems to like it. I’m looking for a mix with low starch & sugar & no molasses to add to his mash that will encourage him to eat up. What do the learned people on here suggest I try?

My 23 year old really struggled to keep weight on in the winter of 2023 so for the 2024 winter I had an equine dietician come and review his diet.

I had been buying all sorts to try and get weight on him! It was costing a fortune and he still never gained weight!

Dietician put him on cush care, sugar beet, just grass and micronised linseed and we’ve never looked back! He is looking so well and getting all the right nutrients, especially as his teeth are getting worn down too. It’s also cheaper feeding this diet than all the stuff I’d been trying!

I now get the dietician out twice a year, just before winter and in spring. It keeps a record of their weights and I’ve also a youngster who is a good doer but also growing so this ensures they both get what they need.

Thank you everyone. Am going to try Cush Care for 26 yr old. What complete feed would you suggest for my other 2 non ridden ponies. 15yrs Connie, eats for England & prone to laminitis. 13 yrs Welsh D rescue, needs a mash due to mouth issues. Have to watch weight for both of them.

The Spillers senior mash was created for horses with poor teeth.

Another vote for Cushcare, it's one of the most conditioning but low sugar & starch feeds I could find in my extensive search for the right feed for my 30yo.

For the other 2 Spiller Speedy Mash is low calorie but palatable (it's apple flavoured). I feed it to my ridden horse alongside his balancer who is a good doer and he does well on it with no unwanted weight gain. He is a fussy thing though and turned his nose up at the other alternatives I tried like Fast Fibre.

Have you tried adding a little mint supplement it’s good for fussy eaters. I use Dengie Hi fi lite molasses free. X
