I have a new arrival coming next weekend (sooooo excited) :D hes a rather chunky 12.3 welsh pony. now he doesnt really need any feed as we have plenty of grass, but the 3 bigger ones all come in to be fed so he will come in too but seems a bit mean to feed them and not him so i need something I can give him a couple of handfuls off that wont put any weight on. More of a token feed so hes not left out. Im thinking of something like D&H safe and sound or happy hoof? any other suggestions welcome.

:( You don't "need" to feed him;

If he's overweight then he needs to be on restricted grass intake, either with the help of a muzzle or strip grazing; He needs to be exercised daily too. Laminitis can occur at any time of year.

Im well aware of that thanks..which is why he is coming in!

and I should have said, he will be on mag ox so yes he does need something to mix it in with.

I give my fatties Fast Fibre if they have to have something to mix supplements into or Speedi Beet, both are suitable for laminitics and low in starch/sugar.

I currently feed my little chunkey a small handfull of happy hoof morning and evening (something for her to eat her supplements with). I recently phoned Allen & Page to see what they had that may be suitable and they recommended "L Mix". This is for those prone to laminitis or are over weight as it gives them all their vits and mins plus is high in fibre but it is very low in calories.

my very good doer is on a couple of handfuls of hi fi good doer once a day, just so he has something to eat while the rest are fed

Rowen Barberry Ready Fibre Mash is the lowest calorie feed I have found. I mix Mag Ox & a vit supplement into less than half a cup full. Really swells up when it's soaked & only needs a minute or so to soak as well. Strongly resembles soggy cardboard , but they seem to like it.

This ^

You are techniquly (sp?) wasting your money as it is a hay replacer BUT then fatty ponies dont think they are missing out. But good doer does smell lovely.

If its supplements he needs maybe just some speedi beet then? He will think hes in heaven everyday.

The things we do lol.
