well my mare friesian 10yrs has struggled with weight gain since her operation last year (to do with her legs).
but can get easily fizzy on alot of feeds and does suffer with LGL

at the moment she is on hifi lite with high fibre cubes she dont look to bad just need that extra bit of weight to turn it into muscle if that makes sense ,as she is just that little bit to underweight even for something that suffers with lami.

have tryed speedibeet and this just sends her threw the roof on a very very small amount!

so what else could i try was thinking maybe alfa-a lite would that work?

anything else?

thanks

Winergy. My mare is very sharp and fizzy, and is a nightmare with any cereals! Got on a trial for the low energy winergy, and was sceptical but wasnt going to turn down good feed! Well 3 mnths after the trial, I am still feeding it. She looks fantastic, feels fantastic and has filled out SO much it is unreal. She was just on the low energy, and isn't a bad doer, but just needed muscle. May be worth trying the conditioning one? It seesm expensive, but you wont need anywhere near the amount recommended, just top it up with a vit and min supplement if you are feeding less than the lowest amount. :)

We use good old fashioned grass nuts, works a treat on our elderly retired cob, has worked well with others in the past. One scoop soaked twice a day. :)

Spillers Conditioning fibre is very good but its not approved by the laminitis trust so I'd ring them and check.

otherwise I'd give Global Herbs Muscle Up a go.

Have you thought about a balancer? - Topspec anti-lam is good... gives them a bit of shine without overdoing it...

Alfa a lite is good but it can give some horses a bit too much spark... may be worth seeing if you can try a sample of someone elses before you buy a big bag... you should know pretty instantly...

I've got a couple of chaps who are having trouble keeping weight on at the moment for various reasons. The feeds which I have tried, and which don't fizz mine up, are Fast Fibre, grass nuts, Alfa A lite, and good old D&H Build Up cubes (not the mix). I about to also try some Allen & Paige Calm and Condition - I spoke to them at Badminton and it sounds like it may be a good alternative.

Dizzy (six year old DWB) is a pain to get weight on/keep it on. After much research, she is now on Saracen's Releave and their Equijewel. No fizzing and putting the weight on nice and steady. Also using it for two ex-race horses :).
