Hey guys
I've had my 17.2hh, 7yr old WBxISH gelding since the end of February. He is not in poor condition by any means but he definitely needs the corners rounded off. I can't see his ribs but his back end isn't as rounded as i'd like. I'm aware that winter is fast approaching so i'd like to get a bit of beef on him.
He's ridden on average 4-5 times a week. Mainly relatively fast hacking. He also has a RC lesson (either flatwork or jumping) once a week.
Temperament wise i'd describe him as a sane and sensible chap in general but he can be quite reactive and explosive so i'd prefer feeding something that's non-heating. He has plenty natural energy.
At the moment i'm feeding him the following once a day:
1.5 scoops of Allen & Page Cool & Collected
2.5 cups of Micronized linseed (Charnwood) (half way into my 2nd bag and can't see that it's made any improvement)
Large handful of Mollychop
3 scoops pink powder
He had his teeth done about 3 weeks ago and his worming is up to date.
He's out 24/7 on not bad grazing and gets the equivelant of around 4 large haynets per day. He's also rugged up on the cool days and every night.
Am I right in thinking that unless I feed a conditioning chaff like Alfa A Oil there's no point as he's getting plenty hay?
Also i've never tried a balancer but they look like mega expensive ways to feed a vit & mineral to me?
I used Baileys No.1 on my last horse when I first bought him and it worked an absolute treat on him but i'd be rather worried about it making my current chap a bit explosive.
