Hey guys

I've had my 17.2hh, 7yr old WBxISH gelding since the end of February. He is not in poor condition by any means but he definitely needs the corners rounded off. I can't see his ribs but his back end isn't as rounded as i'd like. I'm aware that winter is fast approaching so i'd like to get a bit of beef on him.

He's ridden on average 4-5 times a week. Mainly relatively fast hacking. He also has a RC lesson (either flatwork or jumping) once a week.

Temperament wise i'd describe him as a sane and sensible chap in general but he can be quite reactive and explosive so i'd prefer feeding something that's non-heating. He has plenty natural energy.

At the moment i'm feeding him the following once a day:

1.5 scoops of Allen & Page Cool & Collected
2.5 cups of Micronized linseed (Charnwood) (half way into my 2nd bag and can't see that it's made any improvement)
Large handful of Mollychop
3 scoops pink powder

He had his teeth done about 3 weeks ago and his worming is up to date.

He's out 24/7 on not bad grazing and gets the equivelant of around 4 large haynets per day. He's also rugged up on the cool days and every night.

Am I right in thinking that unless I feed a conditioning chaff like Alfa A Oil there's no point as he's getting plenty hay?

Also i've never tried a balancer but they look like mega expensive ways to feed a vit & mineral to me?

I used Baileys No.1 on my last horse when I first bought him and it worked an absolute treat on him but i'd be rather worried about it making my current chap a bit explosive.

Before adding anything else to his feed I would consider, if possible, giving him at least two feeds a day rather than one, he will get far more benefit from his food this way as a horse can only digest so much at a time! (:

Switched my 17hh ISH to Pure Feeds conditioning mix last winter twice a day and haven't looked back. He went onto their Easy mix once a day over the summer and will switch back in November time I think.

I only add his Joint-Aid plus to it and it calmed him alot too.

He looks awesome on it and it's so simple to feed, plus he loves it. Win/Win.

Try talking to Top Spec, I can't speak highly enough about them, I brought a horse in April he was really poor, noticed a difference within a month. I also feed two of my horses that have azoturia the balancer, they will help you work out what you need etc. Really good family runned company!

Cheers for getting back to me guys.

Kaiko, I like the look of the Pure Feeds but they're pretty expensive at £16 a bag. Looks like i'd have to feed 3kg a day (working on 500g per 100kg of horse) which would work out id use a 15kg bag every 5 days! So that's around £96 a month on hard feed alone!!! Or am I being dumb there? Quite possible :)

stacey222, i'll give Topspec a ring.

xx

To be honest I have never fed their recommended amounts and general reports are that most people don't either. I probably about 1/2 to 3/4 whats suggested.

I can't remember how quickly we were getting through it but it was cheaper if ordered in bulk. I think we did 10 bags in just under 3 months and this was feeding my 17hh and 13.2hh veteran together.

It's just so easy, saves time and fuss and means if I need anyone else to feed them, they can't screw it up :)
