Can anyone recommend a feed that would be good for my mare??

I am going to be working her quite hard for the next couple of months (eventing PN), I currently feed her on HiFi Light and Topline Cubes with a few supplements. My instructor said that if i was going to increase the workload that she would need a more suitable diet .

This mare however puts on weight by just looking at grass

so i don't think i want anything to high in calories..she is also prone to tying up and needs something V low in protein.

Any suggestions, ideas as to what feed may be suitable??

Wait and see.

If she does need more energy put her on a mix.

But I wouldn't change a thing until you know for certain that it';s needed.

I feed my very good doer a tiny bit of Spillers Instant response energy mix which is just enough to stop him flagging when he has a long day.

Simple Systems do red bag grass nuts - more energy than oats and are made from spring grass. They will give more omph but may add weight too.

I worked my WB mare fairly hard, XC, SJ etc on high fibre nuts and hi-fi chaff - she naturally had plenty of energy and was a good doer - you may find that yours will be ok on what you are feeding if she is naturally energetic - mine was fine.

Luckily she could have grass - though I had to be careful in spring as it went to her head.

My fatty eventer is on good grass ta the mo and Allen and Page Comp Extra in relatively small amounts (a scoop a day) and is perfect energy wise

I can up it if need be without worrying about him getting fat!!!

But they do need to be getting the work with something so high energy....

Allen & Page Sustain is good, I used this on my previous cob who was on regular hard work, was fit but just needed that little bit more oooomph, worked really well, little more energy, lot more stamina, but with no fizz.

Your instructor is worrying you unnecessarily. If her current diet suits her, I wouldn't change it.

As she is prone to tying up, some of the above suggestions would be a no-go. Hopefully she is on a Selenium supplement, but a broad spectrum vit & min supplement would be a good idea too.

Just monitor her weight and increase the quantities that you give her if necessary. You could split it into 2 or 3 feeds if it gets to be too much.

Yes she is, i suppose i could be worrying for no reason, i'm just concerned with three events coming up in four weeks her 'get up and go' may of 'got up and gone!!'

Baileys Top Line Cubes have an energy content of 13.5MJ/kg, which is higher than some competition mixes!

You could buy a high oil supplement, such as Outshine, to add if she loses her sparkle.

Good luck with your forthcoming events!!
