My mare 6 y/o 16.2 ISH mare is hacking twice daily for an hour a time and also 2 - 3 quite hard schooling sessions per week. She gets turned out everyday on poor grass and has adlib hay when in. She comes in every night.

I currently feed her the recommended on the bag amounts of Ride & Relax and Alfa A, with kelp as a vit/min supplement.
She also has a play ball full of hi fibre cubes each night

She is on poor grazing as all the other welsh cobs on the yard are on restricted grazing as they are good doers and there are no other horses there who need the grass. This means that if I put her in a good field she will have no company so don't want to do that.

She has started to look a little poinched around the quarters, her girth is two holes tighter and I can see a shadow of her ribs.

Any ideas what I could add in to give her a little more weight? I could use corn oil but I tend to save that for the winter.

I got her in February so haven't any idea how she goes through the winter and I don't want her weight to get away from me now!

Thanks for any input.....I've only had to feed vetran ponies and natives before!

Oh she's lovely.

If this is a recent photo, and is what she looks like now - I think she looks fab, and her weight just fine.

Oh that's great. Thanks a lot. I've just been away for a week with OH looking after her. Maybe that's why she looks a bit different! Never had a fit horse before....that must be the difference. Aren't ISH the best? I will never have anything else again!! Must say I think Thumper looks pretty nice too!

He is lovely! Do you reckon mine should be pretty fit with the exercise she is getting then? I only used to do light hacking with my ponies, so don't have much idea. Just out of interest do you give yours a regular day off? I was giving Star Sundays off but my instructor said there was no need to.

Yours most certainly will be quite fit. What sort of work do you do hacking and in your lessons? I do tend to give Corroy Monday's off but not always, but if I don't she will have a quiet hack if she had stood in.

I generally do 1 - 1 1/2 hours hacking roadwork with walk, trot and short safe canters in the morning. I keep it relaxed though. It's fun time for both of us!
In the afternoon we school for around 45 - 60 mins generally. Sometimes in the school or around the village, using kerbs for shoulder in etc. Sometimes a bit of in hand work from Ricard Maxwells new book. She seems to really enjoy those sessions. A couple of times a week I will also lunge her before getting on for 5 mins each way on the lowest setting of pessoa. As for lessons, I hack there and back as it's only 10 mins away and we generally concentrate on jumping and steering. We also have a good fast session in the school once a week for about a hour including warm up and down. Is that about what you do, or do you think I am overdoing it. I might reinstate the day off. I feel really mean not letting her have a little rest!

Corroy is worked about 6 days a week. I have 2 lessons a week one jumping and one flatwork, both quite intense. I will usually school her 1-2 more times in the week and the rest is hacking including trotting and a fair amount of canter work for about 1-1 1/2 hours. At the weekend, if not competing she goes for a long ride of about 10 miles. I do try to give her one day off, or if I can't I give a shortish hack in walk.
