Horse coming Wednesday for a while for a bit of tlc to mine. Basically lame at the mo so will need further investigation. He is currently on bute twice daily. I am going to put him in paddock with very quiet companion and good shelter and ample grass.
I was going to feed him good doer, conditioning cubes and sugar beet, add biotin, oil and bute twice daily. There is ample forage but i can add hay in field as well. He will be rugged accordingly and be generally kept comfortable until he perks up a bit.
Does this sound ok? He is IDXTB (we think) 12 yrs old and looks a little poor for this time of year, but its hardly surprising as he has been unwell.

tbh if he lame and not in work i would be a little cautious of feeding topline,he may be a little poor but if he is lame and the cause unknown you would be better to try and keep the weight off rather than pile it on,i would be inclined to add vits and minerals to a high fibre diet, make sure he has add lib forage etc

So maybe just what i feed my others then, goodoer, grass nuts and add a small amount of speedi beet?

Sounds much better, the more fibre the better, especially with him not being in work, expect muscle loss as he cant be worked, but topline will pile on the pounds and you cant develop that as he is lame,so he will just be carrying excess weight on already lame limbs/joints!
If in doubt add an allround vit/min supplement, seaweed(cheap)

Perhaps try fibre beet instead of sugar beet. It works really well for putting / keeping weight on with less fizz potential.

for any horse that requires condition without fizz. try a feed called coolstance copra meal. its made from coconut and is basically fibre and oil.... its great for fussy eaters and can be fed to laminitics too. check out the website for coolstance.

for a horse that is in poor condition i swear by d&h build and glow it is basicly rice bran. rice bran is high in fat 20% and low in ceral so will not hot up horses. it was recommended to me be the proffessor at the vet school when my horse was very poorly and was discharfe after 16 days in there care with a large weight loss. best of luck and hope this helps
