Hi everyone,
I am looking for a feed that will make my underweight 14.2 pony gain weight but without making him fast and naughty! Does anyone know any feed that will make him gain weight?
Thankks

What type /breed of pony is he? What are you feeding him at the moment? Is he on good grazing? How much work does he do? Is he wormed up to date and has he had he teeth done recently? Sorry. so many questions but we need to know a bit more to give you any advice :)

Hello,
I havnt got him yet but i am getting him sometime next week and just want feed to be ready. There is really good grass at where we are and our field has just had a light fertalizer on it.
Will be working him as soon as he gains the weight, his worming is all up to date and im not sure if he has had his teeth done recently. He is quite a fine pony and he is a connemara thoroughbred cross.
Thankks :)

How badly underweight is he? Have you had the pony vetted before purchase to ensure the poor condition is not due to any medical problems? What is the pony being fed at the moment, and is he on good grazing or ad lib hay at present?

If the pony is only a little underweight and is on poor grazing at present, you may find that the change to your premises with good grazing may actually be enough to improve his condition without feeding a conditioning feed.

If he was mine I would probably give something like high fibre cubes to start with, and see if he gains weight on the good grazing before trying higher calorie feeds. If you ring one of the feed companies such as Baileys or Spillers they can advise you on quantities.

However, if the pony is severely underweight then you do need to find out whether it is just lack of food or another reason and best to liaise with your vet for the best way to proceed.

Thanks everyone,
He is only a little underweight and we have good grazing, so i reckon that he will put it on from the grass. He will be getting high fibre cubes and happy hoof just like my other horses :)
Thanks
