Ok I have had my boy 5 months and he is slowly filling out but he still looks a bit poor in a out of 10 condition score he would be a 4, vet said he looks like a fit racehorse (not the chucky Wb he should be) we are doing the correct work to build him up but its not happening very quickly, (patience isnt my strong point) I have him on Calm and condition, linseed and build and glow. However now he has gone out he is on hunger stike (both vet and physio have recommended he goes out on the good grass). So I need something fully balanced that I dont have to feed more than a scoop a day that is palatable, he likes mixes - preferably needs to have pre/probiotics in it.

I have mini eggs Im willing to share!

Anyone Else

What quantities are you currently feeding of the calm and condition, build and glow and linseed?

You will struggle to find any feed that will put weight on when only fed a scoop a day

An underweight 16.2hh 550kg horse would need at least 3-4kg of hard feed, which is at least 3 scoops of feed ideally split between 2/3 feeds per day

You can feed 4/5 cups linseed per day, any more than that and you will need to supplement with Vit E

Baileys outshine is double the calories/energy than Build and glow so would be more beneficial

Any conditioning mix ideally with DE (digestible energy) above 12 would help put weight on but not if only feeding 1 scoop per day

Another thing to consider would be getting your forage analysed to see how much energy/calories it contains, what can often look like top quality hay/haylage often isn't high in nutrients.

He wont eat the C&C, but he was having the recomemded amount 1.5kg a day, 3 cups linseed and 500g Build and glow split over 2 feeds, but with being out I need something palatable else all he wants is the grass!

Have you tried a course of Pink Powder - I've found that has really perked our WB's appetite up when he has gone off his food.

Sounds very similar to my horse as he really struggles to hold his weight and is very fussy. I put him on Pure Feeds (Pure condition) which he absolutely loves and has also put on weight! It contains balancer/probiotics etc and is very calorie dense so dont need to feed vast amounts of it. At first it looks like it will be expensive but given that you dont need any balancers/additives etc it works out cheaper. Give it a try as I am very impressed by it.

I'll try this, looking at trying Saracen Show Improver Pencils, as in 1 3/4 scoops it says that it will put on weight! Any reviews.

The only trouble with pure feeds is you have to buy in bulk and I have no where to store it!

I agree, I would feed him baileys outshine (if he's fussy they do a mint version) lots of grass and adlib hay/haylage, I would just allow nature to do its thing, especially as the grass is starting to come through.

I am also going to suggest the Pure Feed Company. Our whole yard is on these feeds (various ones for what you need), and without exception they all look amazing. Some came underwieght and have put it on over winter, others with poor coats who are now shining. Great feeds and you do not have to deed huge amounts to get results. Call them it would be worth a chat.

Trev is on the Rowan Barbary mash. If you're in our area at all, I could put a scoop in a carrier bag for you to try? Trev is slightly fussy & he never leaves any. Might be better to have something that he eats rather than something *really* fattening that he wont touch?

Or if there's an RC event coming up, I could pop along & bring you some?

Look up saracen Equi Jewel or Releve, ring them up they are VERY helpful

Mine is on Equi Jewel and he is really fussy he has this with Spillers High Fibre cubes

I really rate Top Spec, the comprehensive balancer and cool conditioning cubes, low starch and sugars, my horse loves it and look fab. The comprehensive balancer has a probiotic, around worming i use the protexin paste to help too.

You say he has gone on hunger strike did this happen when you turned him out? Some horses really hate being out 24/7. Maybe try bringing him in at night and turning out first thing. If he is on his own in the field you could then leave him with his feed.

Has the vet checked him over for any back problems, one of mine looked like a fit racehorse despite eating the feed store clean every week. He turned out to have a bad neck problem and once finally fixed(manipulated under general anaesthetic) he never looked back, looked like brood mare after only a few weeks.

Update we have found a conditioning cube he loves and he runs from the other side of the field to get breakfast and dinner. Its fully balanced so im going to give this 6 weeks with the spring grass and keeping him warm at night. Been checked over by physio and he is all good having a nice 2 weeks off and I have taken photos.

I have a very slim ex racer. Really struggled with his weight. He gets on very well with equi jewel, but this year has needed a bit more as he thrives on grass.
He has the following twice a day
1 CUP OF EQUIJEWEL,
1 CUP OF MICRONISED LINSEED,
1/2 SCOOP SOAKED ALFABEET
1/2 SCOOP SOAKED ROWAN MASH
1/2 SCOOP CONDITIONING CHAFF.
Plus he also has adlib hay (3 nets totalling 70lbs and always half a net left)
Plus a tub trug once a day/night of just grass. He is now in full work, very fit and blooming. I am from the same area so feel free to contact me if you need a chat/help :-)
