My trainer rode my dressage cob this morning and asked me what I was feeding him as he just feels like he needs a bit more sparkle.

He currently has twice per day:

1/3 scoop of Alfa A Oil
1/4 scoop of feed merchant's own Competition Mix
1/4 scoop of Oats
1/2 scoop of Readigrass

Garlic Granules
NAF EnerG (30ml)
Suppleaze Gold

He's a good doer but perfect weight/condition currently. He's fully clipped, ridden 6 x week and only going out for a few hours a day at the mo (while we're having all of this rain, he's a complete pansy, otherwise he's out for 14 hours and in for 10 hours). Oh and he also goes on the walker 20 mins in the morning and in the evening.

So any suggestions please??

Thanks :D

Winter coats are starting up and this takes a lot of energy (so my nutritionist mate tells me). She recommends any of the blood liquid supplements to restore oomph and says it works fabulously on her big WB.

Can we have a pic-thinking of starting dressage with my cob.

Yeah he's on EnerG which is very similar to Red Cell and Propell Plus, which he's been on before.

This is him this morning with my trainer...

I have a welsh D and the only feed that has worked for sparkle/ooomph with him is winergy equilibrium high energy!! fantastic, I use in conjunction with electolytes, propell and enerG for show days x

Ah its an age old problem!! Damn these D's, but then if I fed Shadow what Victor gets he's be the size of a hippo! I spoke with Top Spec last week and they suggested going down the higher fibre route rather than starchy cereals, so I am in the early stages of this new feeding regime.

He's getting half a scoop of Alfa A Lite (200g) will get a cup of Top Spec Comprehensive balancer (once I've finished the Anti Lam), half a scoop of crushed oats, 150ml soya oil, Naf enerG, garlic or seaweed twice a day.

I don't think the Naf has done anything frankly, I also tried ProPell plus, but found it had no change! umm....I've tried naked oats (meant to be rocket fuel) to find he couldn't digest them properly which is apparently quite common, so literally money down the drain!!

i have a welsh section d too and i found dodson and horrell competition concentrate really gives him the extra sparkle but doesnt tip him over the edge! :)

This is the problem with the Welsh D!

I am lucky in that he doesn't tend to put weight on easily like my NFs..........they look at grass and put weight on. For instance when he's in (in winter he's in 24/7 as he's a pansy, he won't go out!) he's on ad lib hay and doesn't balloon at all.

Also lucky in that I get oats for free........plus of being a farmer.

I did remember earlier that I had him on D+H Staypower Museli and Competition Concentrate last summer and I'm *sure* he was very perky on it so might give that another bash.

I was having the same problem with my welsh x all summer, he had enough energy for his workload but no 'sparkle'. I have taken him off Power and Performance + oats and put him on Alpha a + Staypower, I'm now feeding him a quarter of what he was getting as we have PLENTY of sparkle! Also got him on soya oil (qty dependant on workload as puts on weight v easily) and equimins diamond omega which is ground flax seed plus minerals so good for energy/muscle recovery. Very happy with how he is looking/feeling.

Good luck sorting your feeding out, your boy is lovely!

I noticed this with my cob a few weeks ago, so put him back on red cell adn up'd his chaff a little, probably wont see any major difference though for about 2 weeks, you need to give the supplements time to work. It was 6 weeks before I saw any change when he first went onto red cell. Good Luck!
