I know this should be in the stable yard but i guessed more peeps would see it in here, my 7 year old ish is looking very well in himself but very lean, he’s turned out at night and the grass is quite good .. at the mo he’s feed a scoop of winergy growth and a scoop of Alfa beet twice and day with joint sup and a we bit of salt, he’s a very hard horse to get/ keep any weight on, what would you suggest i was wondering whether to put him on top spec cubes and a balancer or just a condition feed and Alfa? I’ve tried a few different thing’s but was just wondering what you guys though would be worth a try, i want to find something and stick with it i hate all this trying new feed, he’s been wormed etc

I would advice possibly upping the growth slightly and adding Baileys outshine

how much tb is in him? I had a similar problem with mine and all the conditioning feeds were just blowing his brain rather than putting any weight on him. Now feed him alfa a, kwik beet and dodson and horrell high fibre cubes and he has never looked better. I also add oil in the winter.
Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions guys, keep them coming, as for hay he has adlib hay, but when he's been out he hardly touches it in the day he just sleeps!, he has quite a bit of tb in him, he doesn't tend to blow his brains but i guess there's always time for him to do so!, the thing he looked best on was top spec super conditioning flakes, balancer, Alfa and sugar beet but that starts to get expensive each month(he went through a bag of the flakes in a week), i tried him on the local balancer but he didn't look as good, so i was think of trying the stud balancer, i don't mind paying it don’t' get me wrong but that’s quite a lot to give him even if i chop it down in to 3 meals a days, so I’m trying to find something that gives the same effect, he had the growth when i got him and he was skin and bone and it worked wonders but it’s just not giving me the same effect this time round, i think I’ll get him a worm count even tho he’s been wormed.

I'd go for Balanced Horse Feeds Show Mix. It wont heat him up, regardless of what the name sounds like - its nearly 20% fibre, less DE than a 'cool mix' and its a fantastic conditioning feed without the excess oomph!!

Its a great feed and a 'complete' feed too although you can bulk it out with chaff, or just use it as it comes. Here's the website link http://www.balancedhorsefeeds.co.uk/show-mix.html

Hope it helps. Wont cost the earth either as the others do, about £10 per bag

[/ QUOTE ] But if it has got less DE than a cool mix, that means it has less calories than cool mix, so you would have to feed it in greater quantities than cool mix to get the same weight gain effect!

If you're thinking of doing a worm count, consider the Eliza (sp?) test for tapeworms, as well as the droppings for egg count. It's a blood test so you'll need to get a vet to do it & then analyse the sample. I did it for my youngster as the previous yr she had a very heavy worm burden (when we bought her) and i wanted to make sure the worming program was working.
