I'm looking for something a bit more for 15hh cob x. He's currently a nice weight, has lost a little condition recently due to being out of work but now starting him back and building up his fitness.
I want him to hold his weight as he is now and not loose anymore so he will be needing a little extra. My normal "go to" would be a handfull or two of linseed however, hes had a virus and liver inflammation and my own research has led me to believe that oil and oil based feeds/conditioning feeds are not a good idea for horses with any form of liver issues.
He's prone to being a bit silly/fizzy and has a lovely sharer at the moment who i'm keen not too scare off ;) so nothing with too much energy!
Was wondering if bog standard high fibre cubes would be enough? I kind of have them in my head as "equine diet feed"

Idea's

I'd increase the Speedibeet - in dry weight terms it is as calorific as many conditioning mixes/cubes. If you are feeding half a scoop when soaked, you should have scope to increase that.

I'd add a balancer - maybe something like Saracen Stamm 30? Just so that you know he's getting everything he needs as he's coming back into work.

Vitamin and mineral wise he should be ok! He's on (no idea how it's spelt!!) some thing which contains everything due to the virus.
I'll up the speedibeet. Easy enough!

oats?

they are not the terror feed most make out, we feed them to everything in varying quantities from semi retired irish horse, the inter 1 horse schooling GP and the 2 youngsters (1 warmblood and 1 pony stallion).

they all have fantastic coats, enough energy for growth or work, no fizz, work barefoot etc.

I wouldn't dare! His brain is literally made out of cotton wool and fireworks. If it were still my daughter riding I'd give it a try as she liked his crazy days but sharer likes him as he is, I'm not sure she'd cope if he did react badly.

start with a handful?

the inter 1 horse is THE sharpest horse, used to be SO spooky on allegedly cool condition feeds, oil based feeds etc but is super chill on his oats and the youngster and pony are not buzzy in the slightest either.

cotton wool and fireworks is exactly how i would have described the inter 1 horse but he is much better on this cereal based diet i really would try it :)
