My retired full Forester has a tiny tiny sprinkling of Safe and Sound twice a day when the others are fed, he has resticted grazing and a slice of hay when he is standing in - as the saying goes, he could live on fresh air!
My NFxTB who is in light/medium work has 1/2 scoop Safe and Sound twice a day with Codlivine added, is strip grazed and has 1-2 slices of hay when he is standing in.
My TB is in full work and has a very different diet!!!!!
I have two darties, a welsh, two shires and a newfie which are fed..
Two darties - No hard feed at all, survive on air !
Welsh - used to survive on air but old boy now that struggles to eat grass so he gets couple of scoops of veteran mix and chaff
Shires - No hard feed
Newfie - scoop chaff & half scoop mix but only because he came in bad condition and isn't up to weight yet
My Welsh D x TB is a competition horse, completely intolerant to the 'recommended' feed guidelines for hard feed but lacking stamina during lessons and at competitions. So I got in a professional nutritionist and am now feeding a 'lite' balancer and Hifi lite when we need more stamina he has Saracen Equijewel. Our grass is good, it has been analysed regularly not just looked at but as he is fit and working so I want to make sure he gets all his vits and mins.
Fresh air
Depends on the weight of the pony, if its a good or a bad doer, what workload its in etc.
Generally the likes of Hi Fi Lite, Safe and sound seem to be popular with the native breed owners
My Section A can maintain weight if fed a lot of good quality haylage in the summer (v poor grass), in the winter she has ab lib haylage plus two hard feeds a day. Last winter this was 1 cup nuts and 1 scoop hifi. She's a poor doer though and when she drops weight it can be hard to put it back on.
My section D is on minimal dieting grazing - basically nothing after the normal ones have grazed it down, has 2 handfuls of equilibrium medium energy a day and loves it keeps him in brilliant condition he's worked 5-6 days a week.
We've minimal poor quality grazing, which we suppliment with hay. Our NF gets a smidge of sugarbeet and chaff with Pink powder in morning and night when the other (poor do-er ) gets fed. Keeps him occupied just long enough for me to put the hay out without mugging me for it.
My welsh A gets a handful of hifi lite for me to put her vits and mins in and a slice of hay in winter. Other than that she lives off air and is on very poor grazing but is still fat- it's a constant battle. My welsh D x tb gelding also gets a handful of hifi lite.
