Hello,

One of my horses is a 16.2hh ex race horse who until last summer has raced all his life he is 7 years old. I have let him have the whole summer off and want to bring him back to work over winter. The problem I have is feeding him!!

He drops weight extremely quickly and I am unsure as what is the best to give him. He also gets fizzy very quickly. I spoke to Allen and Page and they recommended Calm and Condition which I've done a lot of research in.

The feed I was planning to slowly change him to is the following:
Alfa A Oil
Calm and Condition
Pasture Mix
(some one also mentioned to add no.4 or show improver pencils to this??)

Along with his normal supplements, I also had someone mention to feed something like equi jewel or hpd feed balancer.

Please could someone give me there opinion/experiences/suggestions??

Thank you :)

I'd leave out the pasture mix. If you are feeding Calm and Condion you won't need it and it is quite high in Starch.

I would feed him the amount of calm and condition recommended to you by Allen and Page as that will include all the vits and mins and everything he needs split in to 2/3 feeds with a flat scoop of Alfa A oil in each feed to mix it up with and stop him bolting it.

You shouldn't need anything extra.

Lots of hay as well, as much as he can eat :).

He also has cortaflex and garlic in his feeds and a foot supplement as without it his feet are terrible.

Thank you for your replies. He has a snack ball too, putting nuts in this that have a bit of nutrition in was also an idea I had as he loves his ball. Is it best to give him no.4 or something along those lines?

Yep you could do. Instead of the calm and condition you could ring Baileys and use the number 4 in his feed as well if you wanted to make things simple.
I did find the Baileys no4 did heat up my old horse as they are higher in Starch than the calm and condition but each horse is different :).

Or to make life easy you could try pure feeds pure condition. I have my girl on pure easy and she's ballooned on that! Her concentation is ten times better. She wouldn't eat calm and condition because of the texture, then went off condition mix one year but so far in a year hasn't gone off pure feeds!

I'm my experience with ex racers that need to gain weight Bailey outshine is fab. Be careful with mixes as generally they are quite lignin starch at around 24%. Look for under 10 if u can but most cubes r around 13 whuvh should b ok. Lower starch and sugar and high fibre should reduce fizziness.
