My paint horse is still a bit to lean, he is due to be backed this spring so is mainly a field ornament with a little walk out and lunging but as the waethers been hurendous ive had a busted shoulder and hes had bad mud fever hes done very little for lst 3months. he won't be in heavy work when backed just gentle trail riding.
He is out during the day in at night we do have grass but still feed hay/haylage in field on bad days, he has a large haylage net at night (its not wet haylage just one up from hay so not very surgary) i will give him extra in stable if in early or anything and hes never been picked clean by morning so i know hes getting as much as he wants.
He is bucket fed twice a day so gets a total of 600g of micronised linseed, scoop brewers yeast and scoop pro-balance, 2 scoops unmollaased hi-fi, 2 scoops unmollased sugar beet. he also gets a couple of carrots and a treat ball with fiber nuggets in at bedtime.
given that hes done no work is suitably rugged hes still looking like a racehorse so needs a little bit more fat coverage hes quite a muscular horse and am happy wiht his build has a lovely coat and the mud fever is almost all cleared up so happy we have fed to resolve coat and skin issues but still need a little wieght. i know where coming into spring so have good grass to help but obviosuly will re-address his feed again if he starts to get too tubby when the grass comes through but would like to get resolved ready for next winter. He arrive in October and we still had summe rlike weather and grass and he was athletic and lena then so i dont feel he is a naturally fat good doing horse.
He is barefoot and i want to keep sugar and starch down to a minimum he hasn't proven to be fizzy so far so am not too worried about giving him a little energy especially as he will be coming into work soon
