Well, this time a month ago my mare was still on the skinny side, so I signed up for the winergy feed trial. I was meant to feed 3kgs a day, but as she lives out so I have to get her in to feed her I've only been giving 1kg as it took her too long to eat and I was getting impatient.

Now I hadn't really noticed any difference so I took a pic last night to try and compare and was confronted by this bloated monster......!

Shes on fairly poor grazing and working for at least an hour a day so I can only put it down to the feed but bloody hell!!!!!!!
What on earth do they put in it??!! It looks like I'm going to have to cut it out but its a shame as I'd finally found a way of getting her joint supplement down her

Just looks like a grass belly to me - which will go up and down according to whether she is 'full' or not. Places to assess condition are neck, ribs and hindquarters - not the stomach!

Doesnt look that fat at all. Would say it a grass belly.
1kg is a tiny amount of feed, and just cos it takes a while to eat and u get impatient doesnt sound like the best reasons to cut it so drastically

tinker_belle - tried it already - wasn't having any of it! if she can smell it too strongly she will chuck the bucket across the yard and thats it

Ah maybe she's not as bad as I thought then - I must admit I was shocked when I saw the belly in that pic last night!

The reason I've cut it is because 1kg takes her about half an hour to eat - so 3kgs takes ages which would be fantastic if I could leave it in a big bucket in her stable over night, but not so much when you get to the yard at 5pm after work, ride for an hour, wait an hour, then feed and stand over her for two hours while she eats it before you can turn her back out....

and the rate she's gaining weight I don't think she needs the 3kgs anyway, so maybe I've cocked the trial up a bit but the feed is clearly doing its job

Why do you wait an hour to feed after you have ridden, surely if she has been walked and washed off properly, you could save time there?

PS: to be fair though I would nt wait for 2 hours whilst ponio ate !! LOL

Sorry, but I thought it was funny....................

It would take ponio here 2 minutes tops, were he allowed such unmentionables as *whispers* hard feed.

Re-read the instructions perhaps?

And honestly, joking aside, be very careful of laminitis. It's not just a native pony problem

My TB mare is on the Winergy Low and can't believe how much weight she has put on since I started feeding it. She was on the full 3kg initially but have cut her rations right down now as she definately does not need to put on any more weight plus the fact she was struggling to eat that much anyway!

My girls takes about 45 mins to eat hers! But she has it in the little paddock while my mum poo picks so it's ok.

Mine gets left with hers at night, but is eating it in her brekkie too! has 2.5kgs at night at the rest for brekkie.

Sod waiting for an hour after riding tho!

My 2 yr old is on the trial, 3 kg a day. She hasn't put any weight on but doesn't eat a lot of haylage when she's in. She's also always running around the field. Looks well on it though

Why do you wait an hour after riding? As long as you have warmed her down properly and she has had access to water she could have it straight away.......I've never waited more than 15 mins after riding to feed mine, I was always taught when I was a kid that it was the pony's reward for being ridden so needed to be given straight away to reinforce that....

My 2 are on 4kgs and 5kgs and it's gone is about 5 minutes - split into 2 feeds for one and 3 for the other....
