What do you think of the feed??

I'm slightly sceptical now that I've seen how much Alfalfa is in it!! It doesn't really 'do' anything for my horses!

Also, does anyone else think that the rate it has to be fed is quite high??

I've been told to feed my 16hh WB 3year old a massive 4kgs every day!!! That's nearly two of the bags a week!

The older horse 16.3 WB is to get 4.5 kgs a day - which is more than 2 bags a week!!

Am going to be totally bored with feeding them by the end of this month!

Will be interesting to see if they will still eat it after a few days at that quantity - the bigger WB is notoriously picky

I as a bit surprised reading the ingredients, apart from grass nuts and wheat chaff it just seems like blue chip, which you feed about 300grams a day! I'm pretty sure that my mare will get bored of eating 2.5kgs a day.

Our horses are on a feed trial that as advertised on here earlier in the month. It was delivered on friday so we're all analysing it now

Mine's gone missing!

Am most annoyed! I was told by Cat it would be here BY friday, so on thursday I phoned up the store to see if it had arrived/when they were expecting it...they're only a tiny store so thought that they wouldn't want it cluttering up their stores-9 bags. They said it would come on the delivery which normally arrives lunch/early afternoon on friday, so I told them I'd collect it friday evening after work....

Go to pick it up and it's not there...they have no idea whether it was forgotten at the distributers/wholesalers it was meant to be coming from with their other delivery, or it hadn't arrived as planned at the distributors....

Typically there was no answer at winergy, it was a few minutes after five on a friday, and the same at Bearts....

So, who knows...

And I was so looking forwards to seeing what it was like lol Someone post a pic!!

Mine turned up fine. Seems ok to me. i thought 3kg seemed a bit high when she said it but i feed twice a day anyway. And when i put it in the bucket its nearly the same amount i feed each day so not so worried about that.

Moo is scoffing it down, but as we have no grass! Its not surprising. Im just hoping it will put back on the 20kg she has lost in the last few weeks.

Another point for debate.......
Bearing in mind there feeds normally cost around £12-£15 is it going to be worth that??? Would make my monthly feed bill over £100!!!!!!

My horse has been on this trial for about 2 months now, I am supposed to be feeding him 4kgs a day but I only feed him once a day now so he gets 2kgs instead.
He looks fab, has really put on cond and he is fairly laid back on it (no different to what he was like before) I put some before pics on here in PG, I'll have to take some more so you can see the difference!

My horse really loves the stuff and licks the bucket out, too early to tell if it will help her condition but she does like it. I'm slightly concerned about the cost too but i would be interested in keeping her on it for good if it doesn't work out too expensive.

It took my horse 2 hours to eat half his daily ration

made me late for the pub on friday evening

So he is having it all in the morning (fills an entire corner manger) and he just picks at it through the day, he isn't overly keen on it tbh

really can't see how it is going to be cost effective

Was this the one for the conditioning feed? I didn't reply as I like staying in the saddle!! lol

That said, I only have Oscar on Hifi and Alfa beet and he looks amazing on it. Probably top up with fibre nuts in the winter but alfaalfa is great for conditioning.....

Yep, it's the one for the conditioning feed. Tried it on the big girl tonight and predictably she took two mouthfuls and that was that.

Youngster wasn't overly keen either.

Have left their buckets in so will see if they've eaten it by the morning. They're only getting a kilo of it each today with some of their usual chaff mixed in so that I can build up to the 'real' ration.

I started Alee my 4 year old on it yesterday. I did explain to them that she was only fed once a day but they still want me to feed her 3kg which I feel is a lot in one go (worked it out at 4 round scoops!!!) I gave her just 2 scoops yesterday and today, yesterday she left half of it but today she ate all of it.
The thing is though do any of us ever feed what the manufacturers recommend? If I did feed what was recommended on the back of the bags i'd be getting through a bag of nuts in 4 days and thats just on one horse!!!!!

That's also a good point - my big horse has to have what equates to 5 scoops per day - that would be over two bags per week, whereas normally she would go through about 3/4 bag of conditioning mix a week, plus chaff and beet.

I appreciate that the feed is an 'all in one' and only needs wetting down but it's still a heck of a lot of feed to throw in.

If I was to feed my two girls at the recommended rate I'd get through 4 bags of feed and going on rough estimates for conditioning mix of £15 per bag then that would work out to about £60 per week - no way would that be sustainable for any length of time (unless I win the lottery!)

Has anyone thought maybe they've exaggerated the amount you need to feed in order to demonstrate the 'conditioning' properties of the feed over 4 weeks?

Mine going great! Defiantly much calmer on the yard, and she look like she is putting on weight. Only question, what is 'Timothy' and what does it do?

i agree, surely you all only went on this trial because your horses needed to improve condition or they already were on a conditioning feed? are youpaying for this feed or are they giving it to you free?

if you're getting it free i can't see why they would want you to feed more than you need.

i alreday use winergy and one of mine is on about 5kg a day but thats what she's need if she was on cubes anyway.

maybe if you fed more in the first place you wouldn't have needed a conditioning feed - just an idea ;o)

Timothy grass is very similar to the famous Kentucky bluegrass of America. This grass is higher in fibre and lower in protein than many other grasses.

I haven't started mine on it yet, starting her on Friday so I can keep an eye on her over the weekend.

Oh, ParkRanger, the idea of the feed is that it's formulated to give condition without fizz
smile.gif
so in theory you would've stayed in the saddle if you were on the trial.

Oh, and it's free

My feed merchant said that the Wynergy and Spillers feeds are getting a bit expensive and only the regular users buy it. So unless they give us a MASSIVE discount, I wont be buying it afterwards no matter how good it is. It does just look like blue chip and alfalfa mixed together to me.

you get what you pay for! my feed bill is huge but my horses look amazing and i haven't had the vet out since i chnaged feeds (she used to tie up a lot).

I'm sure they'll be delighted to know you've no intention of buying it afterwards - lets hope they don't read the fourm - ha!
