Hi, my horse is a 14.3hh Irish cob with ten inches of bone, she has an acre and a half to herself, which is sectioned into three sections with electric fence, do I need to give her any hard feed? is she getting all her nutrients and vitamins from the grass? If i do need to give her something, what do you think it has to be.
thanks

If your horse is maintaining her weight on grass alone there is no need to give her any additional hard feed. However, if you are worried about whether she is getting enough vits/mins then you might want to feed a vit/min supplement in a handfull of chaff, or use a balancer like Top Spec, Blue Chip etc.

Ive several heavy cobs myself, if there is grass in the field then they do not get any extra feed. Only reason they are getting more now is because they are in foal and getting a little mare and foal mix

My boys get a handful of lucie stalks chaff, couple of carrots and their vit and min supplement, plus linseed for Cairo's joints and brewer yeast for sweet itch.

At the moment the grass is good and that is plenty for them as neither works hard.

I was asking myself the same question...I have an old pony who has never really needed any additional feed through the summer at all. I also have a 5 year old quarter horse who again looks good and does not need the extra food. However I do worry about them not getting their goodness so I am feeding them garlic powder, small amount of baileys outshine and cod liver oil in with some chaff. They are on 3 acres of grass and this seems to help them stay healthy and keeps my mind at ease. They also have a salt lick by Dengie which seems to provide extra goodness for them....
