Feedback on east midlands bridleways needed!

As the local BHS access officer, I need your help with feedback about east midlands bridleways. Groundwork Greater Nottingham are currently working in partnership with Broxtowe Borough Council to produce a Green Infrastructure Strategy for the borough of Broxtowe. The strategy will involve an analysis of all green spaces, wildlife habitats, public footpaths, bridleways, and other accessible open spaces across Broxtowe with the an aim of suggesting areas for improvement to create additional networks of green corridors which are accessible to both people and wildlife. The project aims to produce a ten year action plan identifying areas for improvements to create multi-functional, accessible green networks and corridors across the borough to benefit people and wildlife.

The aim is to consult with a number of user groups to establish the current provision of access, and to see where there are potential gaps in access to bridleway networks across the borough for horse riders.

Are you aware of any areas where additional bridleways are needed within the East Midlands or where there may be potential gaps in the access network? This is particularly within Broxtowe, Rushcliffe and Gedling? The deadline for funding is the middle of September so please let us know!

We have a bit of an ongoing problem in our local area, NG16. Where a private peice of land has been ridden for many years (in excess of 40) by permission of the land owner to join 2 bridleways and in effect create a loop... now new landowners are trying to stop us riding this "loop".

Is this something you could help with?

Rushcliffe bridleways are generally very good - a few sticky gates or dropped gates but fine on the whole - certainly not enough to put you off using them!
 
Hi, I'm based Im based in Bradmore (NG11). The main issue with bridlepaths in this area of Rushcliffe is they don't go anywhere. It would be great to try and join a few of the smaller up and down bridlepaths together, for example Bradmore village Bridleway could be joined to the Bunny bridleways and then across to the Bridleway by Weldale livery which would allow access to riders from Ruddington / Plumtree to ride all the way over to West Leake / Gotham / Clifton. Currently in this area of Rushcliffe any rides over around 5 miles require an awful lot of riding in the A60 which is rather dangerous.

Hi - I have some information about creating new rights of way through long use - you have to provide evidence of 20 years use, but I believe it is without permission as such. I'll have a look at my literature and come back to you!

Hi - I've had a look at my literature and the fact that you have had permission from the previous owner may actually count against applying to make the route a right of way as part of being able to dedicate a route through long use is that the route has been used without force, secrecy or permission. It is still possible to apply to make a route an official right of way even if the owner knows that people are using the route as long as they haven't put up any barriers, stopped people using it or taken any action to categorically say that they don't intend to allow the route to become a public right of way (which involves making a section 31 statement which is lodged with the council which protects them from users applying to have a right of way created even if they have been using the route for 20 years. It may be worth checking with the council whether a section 31 declaration has been made on the land in which case there isn't an awful lot more that can be done. If there isn't it may be worth going for it (this link takes you to a helpful leaflet about getting new rights of way http://www.bhs.org.uk/~/media/BHS/Files/PDF Documents/Access leaflets/Recording a Right of Way.ashx) It may be worth speaking with the landowners to see if they would be willing to allow access by written permission? This would then protect them from people applying for the route to be dedicated as an actual right of way if that is what is worrying them?

Not in Nottingham area, but we have a right of way that is unusable near Bourne, Lincs. I have contacted LCC a few times over the years but nothing has been done. It's either a Byway or a RUPP. I can't remember which. Marked on the OS map but no sign up. It's in the village of Stainfield. Just a bit further along the road there is a bridleway that goes nowhere, and another in the other direction that goes to a busy main road (A15). As there is quite a big livery yard in the village and several others close by, it would certainly be usefull to have more bridleways.

Hi
A Byway should be usable for horses - in what way is it unusable? Is it blocked? If so then it is the Council's job to enforce that the landowner keeps the right of way accessible but it can be slow going as budgets are cut and the councils say they haven't enough staff to deal with the problems.

It used to be a RUPP, so is a restricted Byway now I suppose. It just isn't there. Half of it is a track that goes to a house then fence and nothing. No signs at all. LCC just ignore it. No response from them over several years. Oh well, I suppose it will be lost then. I've given up trying.
