Hi all,

Just wondering what to feed my 2yo this winter, as I dont want him loosing condition over the winter, its took me ages to get him from a scabby donkey to a beautiful prince haha!! Hell be out for about 4 hours per day, currently hes on a handful of chop and a handful of mix :) just own make from local feed place. Was thinking speedibeet? and perhaps abit of bran?

As much forage as he will eat and as near to 12 hrs turnout as possible, if he can't live out 24/7. Youngsters need to be able to move in order to develop correctly.

My two year old (very good doer) is turned out 24/7 but he is getting topspec all in one supplement with little of their topchop alfalfa after a weigh in and discussion with their equine nutritionialist.

I'd be looking to get him out more as four hours isn't a lot. Other than that good ad lib forage and a balancer to make sure he gets all the vits and mins he needs. You don't want him 'topped', slow and steady growth for long term vitality.

Wouldn't recommend bran unless specific reason

That's as much turnout as I can find round here! Not allot of places actually do any turnout so should think I'm lucky with 4 hours, beggars can't be choosers and all that.

Any balancers anyone can recommend instead of saying more turn out as that won't happen.

I just used a good vit and min supplement with my ID x tb, and ad lib forage. I have never used suregrow but everyone seems to like it, did you take him off it for a reason?

I use Suregrow as a balancer for my 4, 19, 15, 3 and 2 years old. The 2 year old (eventer) has his full amount, the others just half a mug full (3 year old in a trad cob, very good doer) They all get a feed but youngsters just get chaff and good quality hay and turnout during daylight hours.

I use Baileys Stud balancer for the foals and yearlings, maybe carrying it on into their two year old year if they are a bit behind. They then either go onto Saracen essential balancer or just a NAF supplement in some chaff/speedibeet if they are good doers.

No reason other than I ran out and I had a bag of mix so decided to try him on that :) will probably go back to suregrow on the full amount :)
