....... What would be recommended?

As per my other threads, I've been toying with the idea of taking on my friends 14.2 ponio

Now my horse is not a good doer, so is on balancer, hi fi, speedibeet and ad lib hay

So being that ponio is on the opposite end of the scale, what would I be looking at feeding him

Currently his owner just chucks some cheap fibre cubes at him

Also, he's 4 yo

Thanks all :D

My fatty gets a handful of hifi good doer to keep him busy while his skinny field mate eats his feed. He doesn't need anything but it keeps him occupied. He just has grass and the odd bit of hay when the grass runs out or is frozen. If he was in harder work and needed a feed I would stick to fibre, so really just hifi and speedibeet, maybe a bit of lo cal balancer.

My welsh D just has Dengies hi-fi lite, Bailey no 14 lo cal balancer & micronised linseed plus hay. He's still quite young and not in work yet so this also keeps him sane. During the summer no hay and restricted grazing.

My traditional who lives out 24/7 is on adlib haylage and one feed of Speedibeet with a vit/min supplement and soya oil. I don't think she actually needs even this but it's part of her daily routine. She's really thriving on the haylage. Must add though, it would depend on how much you're intending to do with him - my cob's turned away for the winter.

That's ok. Mine is also a 4yo. I really just give him the minimum amount to keep him in good condition. His coat is glossy and healthy, he just looks well from the inside out but as he is not yet broken I'm really watching his weight. Once he is and exercising more I might have to increase his feed intake.

My Highlands, from yearlings to a 16yo, including two in foal mares and a stallion, are all on ad lib hay. They are outside at sea level, 24/7, in the Highlands with natural shelter (a wood) only. They don't need any more than this except a salt block. Of course, their condition is checked daily, as even on this they can still put on weight. If they were working or losing condition, they'd get soaked sugar beet pellets and whole oats. But your conditions might be different.;)
