Have had my 2 year old warmblood mare for 6 weeks. When I got her she was a good weight for going into winter but due to the stress of certain things she has lost a lot of weight. At the moment she is getting 1 round scoop Alfa A oil and 1/2 round scoop pony nuts twice a day plus selenavit in her evening feed. Can anyone recommend anything to help her put on weight? She is out in day and in at night with adlib hay.

i always use baileys no 4 conditioning cubes for poor dooers and for those which need bit weight on, i think its fab

As she is only 2 she still has a lot of growing to do. I don't believe that her current diet is providing enough building blocks for her growth. I have my 2 yr old on Dodson & Horrells Mare & Youngstock mix (formerly Phase 2) and she is doing really well on that.

I would suggest that you contact some of the feed company helplines to obtain proper advice on feeding for your filly for growth as well as weight gain.

My gypsy cob is 2 1/2 and doing very well on Simple Systems luciestalks, greengold and total eclipse supplement - he also has garlic, black sunflower seeds and carrots. He has just started having speedibeet and ad lib hay.

Lovely coat, growing well but not overweight and being a high fibre diet he eats for a long time but gets plenty of protein from the greengold and sunflower seeds.

Veg/corn/any oil would be the simplest addition to make. The selenium and vit e in the selenavite will balance it out so I would add a fair bit (1/2 pint in each feed).
Spillers yearling pellets may be a good choice, but personally id use oats and barley. Mine get 1 scoop alfa oil, 1 scoop oats, 1 scoop barley twice a day. With oil, salt and selenavite e added.
Obviously keep some pony nuts on standby, in case she cant go out for whatever reason.

Two year old on my yard is on 1 scoop of bog standard mix and chaff once a day - in at night with adlib haylage.

I would certainly increase the hardfeed - and perhaps be inclined to get a bag of youngstock mix just until she has put the condition back on. You may have her rugged - but if you haven't I would get a good rug on her as well.

Try just increasing her rations until she is the weight you want her to be. Beano is two in May and he is on Alfa A Lite and Dodson & Horrell Mare and Youngstock mix. We vary the amount he has according to how he is looking, but he generally has a full scoop of each twice a day.

feed a specailist youngstock complete feed, ad lib forage and add in oil if she needs extra weight.youngsters are meant to look quite light though so a few ribs should concern you.
youngstock need different minerals vits and protein for growth so normal feeds wont provide this.
